Samsung tied this game at five in the bottom of the seventh when right fielder Park Han-yi blasted a two-run homer off of Doosan reliever Lim Tae-hoon. Lim had a normal start to the season, but some comments about an announcer earned him a demotion to the Futures League in late May. Doosan basically left him there for more than three months until recalling him last week. This was Lim's second KBO appearance since May 22nd.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the 11th. Doosan reliever Fernando Nieve walked DH Kang Bong-gyu to start the inning. Kang was quickly replaced by pinch runner Kang Myeong-guh. Kang advanced on a bunt from backup infielder Son Ju-in. Nieve put a pitch in the dirt and it bounced away from catcher Yong Deok-han. Kang raced to third and made the turn. He sprinted toward home and dove at the plate. The ball made it to Nieve, but he appeared to miss the tag and Kang was ruled safe. This triggered a hissy fit from Nieve that ended with him tossing the ball near the umpire's feet. This also triggered celebration from the Samsung bench.

This one was tied at three heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Lotte put runners on second and third after some questionable play by center fielder Park Jae-hong allowed Hong Seong-heun to double. Catcher Kang Min-ho was intentionally put on to load the bases for pinch hitter Park Jong-yoon. Park hit a sac fly to right to plate the go-ahead run. Lotte added some insurance when a run scored on a fielder's choice from third baseman Hwang Jae-gyun.
Another poorly played ball from SK right fielder Park Jeong-kwon allowed Lotte outfielder Hwang Seong-yong to triple with one out in the seventh. Third base was as far as Hwang would get because Lee Dae-ho was intentionally put on and Hong Seong-heun grounded into a double play to end the threat.
SK ace Kim Kwang-hyeon made his triumphant return from the Futures League and pitched the eighth inning. Kim recorded a scoreless inning, but some mediocre defense and bad luck forced him to stick around longer than he wanted. Kim gave up a hit and two walks and threw a wild pitch, but somehow kept the Giants off the scoreboard.
SK threatened in the top of the ninth. With a runner on second and one out, pinch hitter Choi Dong-su doubled down the left field line to cut the lead to 5-4. Lotte closer Kim Sa-yul gave up a walk and a single to load the bases. The only thing that kept SK from scoring on the base hit was a terrific deke from Lotte right fielder Hwang Seong-yong. Kim Sa-yul battled the next two batters and managed to get a pair of lazy fly balls to end the threat and the game.
This win gives Lotte sole posession of second place.

Nexen HR - None
LG starter Ben Jukich threw eight shutout innings(120 pitches, 77 strikes) while earning his 10th win on the season. Jukich gave up seven hits and four walks while striking out five.
Nexen's Shim Su-chang threw well, but was stuck with yet another loss on his record. Shim tossed seven innings(103 pitches, 61 strikes), but was tagged for both LG runs(one earned). Shim surrendered four hits and two walks while striking out seven.
LG first baseman Lee Taek-geun broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with a solo homer. The Twins added a second run in the fourth inning when Nexen first baseman Park Byeong-ho bobbled a ball that would have ended the inning. Instead of walking to the dugout, LG's Lee Byeong-gyu walked in from third to score the second LG run.

Kim Kwang-hyeon Had a What?
Cerebral infarction? Suffers facial paralysis? And he's been trying to pitch this year? And the information was apparently leaked from the hospital?
I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV, but it probably would be a good idea if Kim took a few months off. Supposedly(again, not a doctor), this is the reason Kim has appeared "sluggish" this year. I think having a stroke at the age of 22 might do that to a person.

Lessons Learned From Watching KBO Baseball Last Night
Ryu Hyeon-jin is the best pitcher in the KBO. We've got a Steve Carlton situation in Hanhwa. Could Ryu win the MVP this year? It's possible. He'll likely keep Hanhwa out of 8th place, but does it really matter? Is there that much more shame in an 8th place finish than a 7th place finish? Ryu struck out nine Nexen Heroes last night during a three-hit, one-walk complete game shutout victory over the Heroes. Hanhwa managed to scratch out a 2-0 victory. The way Ryu was pitching, that makes it sound like Nexen was in the game. Nexen almost found a way to score negative runs last night.
The shallow end of the SK bullpen is really, really shallow. SK dropped last night's game to Samsung 14-1. Samsung starter Jang Won-sam tossed six shutout innings. Jang gave up six hits and two walks while striking out eight. Samsung DH/RBI machine Choi Hyeong-woo drove in four more runs while going 2-3 with a walk, a double, a homer and two runs scored. Samsung shortstop Kim Sang-su finished 3-5 with a pair of RBIs. SK ace Kim Kwang-hyeon looked awfully human last night. Kim was battered for four runs on seven hits and three walks during his five innings of work. He did manage to strike out five batters before getting the hook.
Lotte proved that it's okay to give up six runs in the first inning as long as they score seven. Lotte beat Doosan 10-7, but 13 of the 17 runs came in the first inning. Oh and neither team homered in the first. Both kept the line moving. Only three Doosan Bears starters DIDN'T have at least two hits last night. Giants shortstop Park Ki-hyeok drove in three runs thanks to a double with the bases loaded. Giants DH Hong Seong-heun did hit a 3-run homer in the 2nd inning that proved to be the difference on the scoreboard. Hong finished 2-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Lotte Reliever Lim Kyeong-wan recorded his third save. He might have found himself a job as the Lotte closer...until he blows a save in horrifying fashion.
KIA is going to let Aquilino Lopez throw until his shoulder flies apart. Lopez tossed an 8-inning complete game in a losing effort. He was battered for five runs on twelve hits and two hit batsmen. He only needed 122 pitches to finish the game. LG broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 8th inning on an RBI double from 2nd baseman Kwon Yong-kwan. The worst part wasn't that the double came with two outs, the worst part was the wild pitch that came right before it to move the runner into scoring position. Kwon went 3-4 with two RBIs. Someone wants to move out of the #9 slot!

SK ace Kim Kwang-hyeon is set to make his first start of the 2010 season on Tuesday against Hanhwa. Here's hoping he knocked off some of the rust.

KIA cut the Samsung lead in half in the 4th inning when Samsung left fielder Kang Bong-gyu badly misplayed a routine flyball. Kang called off center fielder Lee Yeong-wook and failed to make the catch. It was made even worse by the fact that he had his neck warmer pulled up past his nose. The error allowed KIA DH Na Ji-won to score from first. KIA took the lead in the 5th inning on a 2-RBI single from catcher Kim Sang-hoon. Francisco Cruceta was the tough luck loser for Samsung. The Dominican national tossed 7 innings(108 pitches, 67 strikes) and gave up all 3 runs(2 earned). Cruceta allowed 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5. KIA reliever Kwak Jeong-cheol threw 3 2/3 innings(45 pitches, 33 strikes) of scoreless relief against the Lions. Kwak gave up only 2 hits and struck out 6.

Hanhwa should trademark the "Out-of-no-where-ridiculous-rally." They've done it in three consecutive games against the Giants. This time they posted a 7-spot in the 5th inning and would have won if their bullpen wasn't awful. This Hanhwa offense looks fairly benign, but they're capable of putting up a lot of runs in a short time. I'm really curious to see if they'll keep doing this all year. Hanhwa reliever Julio DePaula looks like a man about to receive a plane ticket home. Every time he pitches, he gives up runs. This really wasn't the case of a two great offenses slugging it out. It was the case of two really crappy pitching staffs hurling slop at each other. The two teams combined for 17 walks and 22 hits. I'm not giving a blow-by-blow because, well, with the way these teams pitched it would take three paragraphs and I'm a lazy, lazy man. I will tell you this much, Lotte won the game in the least entertaining fashion possible. A walk-off walk. With the bases loaded, DePaula walked Lotte DH Hong Seong-heun to score the winning run. Lotte third baseman Lee Dae-ho went 4-5 with 4 RBIs. Hanhwa DH Lee Do-hyeong went 2-4 with a double, 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Moving on...

With the game tied at 4 in the top of the 6th, LG mounted a rally. With one out and a runner on 2nd, LG right fielder Oh Ji-wan single up the middle to score the run from 2nd and give LG a 5-4 lead. Oh advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Oh would later score on center fielder Lee Dae-hyeong's single. Oh finished the game 3-4 with a double 1 RBI and 3 runs scored. LG added two more runs in the 8th inning on an RBI sac fly from Lee Byeong-gyu and an RBI single from DH Park Yeong-taek. Doosan managed to add another run during their fake rally in the bottom of the 8th to make it a save opportunity for Shinya Okamoto. Okamoto threw a scoreless 9th and earned the save.

4/8 Roundup and News
The only real news was that SK lefty Kim Kwang-hyeon was activated before Thursday's game. I thought he was still at least a week away from a return.

Well, if we ever wanted to know what a game would be like if the KBO gave Hanhwa 4 free runs, we had our chance last night. Doosan battled back from an early 4-0 deficit to steal a victory from the jaws of defeat. Hanhwa started the scoring in the 2nd inning when left fielder Choo Seung-woo doubled with the bases loaded and plated all three runners. Hanhwa added another run in the 5th inning on a sac fly from right fielder Choi Jin-haeng. Doosan started to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the 5th. They scored their first run on an RBI single from Kim Hyeon-su. Doosan plated two more runs in the 6th inning on a 2-run single from center fielder Lee Jong-wook. Then with runners on 2nd and 3rd and two outs in the 8th inning, DH Lee Seong-yeol hit a line drive to left field. The ball appeared to strike Hanhwa left fielder Choi Jin-haeng in the thigh. It was like he tried to catch the ball with his crotch. I'm really not sure what he was trying to do, but it didn't work and both runners scored easily while Choi tried to find the ball. Doosan closer Lee Yong-chan tossed a 1-2-3 9th inning for the save.

Kim Kwang-hyeon's return really overshadowed a tight, entertaining ballgame by two of the best teams in the league. I have the impression that a shared start between Gary Glover and Kim Kwang-hyeon was planned in advance, but I haven't been able to dig up any direct quotes. Glover stuck around for 4 innings(60 pitches, 38 strikes) and threw reasonably well. He gave up 1-run on 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2. He left the game with a lead, but didn't figure in the decision because he didn't last 5 innings. Kim Kwang-hyeon took over in the 5th inning and looked rusty, but still has the same electric stuff. He just needs to work on his command. Kim tossed only two innings(31 pitches, 19 strikes). He gave up 1 run on 2 hits and struck out one batter. The K came on a nasty 2-2 slider in the dirt to KIA 2nd baseman Ahn Chi-hong. SK broke a 2-2 tie in the 6th inning on an RBI single from 2nd baseman Jeong Geun-woo. SK tacked on insurance runs in the 7th and 8th and the bullpen locked the game down.

I want to believe in Samsung, but I need to see them beat someone other than LG, Hanhwa or Nexen before I can decide if this team is any good. They looked solid on Tuesday and Wednesday, but really mediocre on Thursday. I still have no idea what to make of this team. I need to see them against SK or Doosan first.
Samsung appeared to be cruising to a 4-2 victory in the 8th inning of Thursday's game, but a Nexen rally made victory look impossible. Nexen put runners on 1st and 3rd with one out. Samsung called on closer Oh Seung-hwan to put out the fire. Nexen executed a double steal to score their first run. While Doug Clark was running for second base, pinch runner Hwang Jae-gyun took off for home. He was safe before Samsung shortstop Park Jin-man could get the ball out of his glove. After retiring left fielder Song Ji-man, Oh walked 1st baseman Lee Sung-yong to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Nexen shortstop Kang Jeong-ho promptly blasted his second homer of the evening and gave Nexen a 6-4 lead. Kang finished the game 3-4 with a double, 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Samsung chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the 8th inning with an RBI ground out from Kang Bong-gyu. After a scoreless top of the 9th, Samsung catcher Jin Kab-yong lead off the bottom of the inning with a walk. Samsung shortstop Park Jin-man ripped a line drive into center. Center fielder Jeong Su-sang dove to make the grab. He missed. The ball bounced away from him and rolled to the wall. LG used its high priced lineup to generate some serious power on Thursday night. Left fielder Lee Byeong-gyu, right fielder Lee Jin-yeong and catcher Cho In-seong all took Lotte pitching deep last night. Ryan Sadowski was the victim for most of LG's offensive assault. Sadowski was battered for 5 runs on 4 hits, 4 walks and a hit batsman during his 6 innings of work. The only Lotte offense came from a 2-run homer off the bat of third baseman Lee Dae-ho. LG center fielder Lee Dae-hyeong had a goofy stat line. Lee finished 0-2 with a walk, a run scored, 2 stolen bases and 2 sacrifices. LG pitcher Park Myeong-chan pitched well enough, but he didn't exactly dazzle during his 5 2/3 innings(75 pitches, 46 strikes). Park allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, 2 walks and 1 hit batsman. Park chipped in 2 measly strikeouts.
Doosan 5, Hanhwa 4

Well, if we ever wanted to know what a game would be like if the KBO gave Hanhwa 4 free runs, we had our chance last night. Doosan battled back from an early 4-0 deficit to steal a victory from the jaws of defeat. Hanhwa started the scoring in the 2nd inning when left fielder Choo Seung-woo doubled with the bases loaded and plated all three runners. Hanhwa added another run in the 5th inning on a sac fly from right fielder Choi Jin-haeng. Doosan started to chip away at the lead in the bottom of the 5th. They scored their first run on an RBI single from Kim Hyeon-su. Doosan plated two more runs in the 6th inning on a 2-run single from center fielder Lee Jong-wook. Then with runners on 2nd and 3rd and two outs in the 8th inning, DH Lee Seong-yeol hit a line drive to left field. The ball appeared to strike Hanhwa left fielder Choi Jin-haeng in the thigh. It was like he tried to catch the ball with his crotch. I'm really not sure what he was trying to do, but it didn't work and both runners scored easily while Choi tried to find the ball. Doosan closer Lee Yong-chan tossed a 1-2-3 9th inning for the save.
SK 5, KIA 2

Kim Kwang-hyeon's return really overshadowed a tight, entertaining ballgame by two of the best teams in the league. I have the impression that a shared start between Gary Glover and Kim Kwang-hyeon was planned in advance, but I haven't been able to dig up any direct quotes. Glover stuck around for 4 innings(60 pitches, 38 strikes) and threw reasonably well. He gave up 1-run on 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2. He left the game with a lead, but didn't figure in the decision because he didn't last 5 innings. Kim Kwang-hyeon took over in the 5th inning and looked rusty, but still has the same electric stuff. He just needs to work on his command. Kim tossed only two innings(31 pitches, 19 strikes). He gave up 1 run on 2 hits and struck out one batter. The K came on a nasty 2-2 slider in the dirt to KIA 2nd baseman Ahn Chi-hong. SK broke a 2-2 tie in the 6th inning on an RBI single from 2nd baseman Jeong Geun-woo. SK tacked on insurance runs in the 7th and 8th and the bullpen locked the game down.
Samsung 7, Nexen 6

I want to believe in Samsung, but I need to see them beat someone other than LG, Hanhwa or Nexen before I can decide if this team is any good. They looked solid on Tuesday and Wednesday, but really mediocre on Thursday. I still have no idea what to make of this team. I need to see them against SK or Doosan first.
Samsung appeared to be cruising to a 4-2 victory in the 8th inning of Thursday's game, but a Nexen rally made victory look impossible. Nexen put runners on 1st and 3rd with one out. Samsung called on closer Oh Seung-hwan to put out the fire. Nexen executed a double steal to score their first run. While Doug Clark was running for second base, pinch runner Hwang Jae-gyun took off for home. He was safe before Samsung shortstop Park Jin-man could get the ball out of his glove. After retiring left fielder Song Ji-man, Oh walked 1st baseman Lee Sung-yong to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs. Nexen shortstop Kang Jeong-ho promptly blasted his second homer of the evening and gave Nexen a 6-4 lead. Kang finished the game 3-4 with a double, 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Samsung chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the 8th inning with an RBI ground out from Kang Bong-gyu. After a scoreless top of the 9th, Samsung catcher Jin Kab-yong lead off the bottom of the inning with a walk. Samsung shortstop Park Jin-man ripped a line drive into center. Center fielder Jeong Su-sang dove to make the grab. He missed. The ball bounced away from him and rolled to the wall. And the winner is...
The KBO has named it's award winners for the 2008 season.

The SK Wyverns lefty ace, Kim Kwang-hyeon came in first in the voting with 51 votes. Doosan Bears left fielder and batting champ, Kim Hyeon-su finished 2nd with 27 votes. Kim Hyeon-su's 1-21 performance in the Korean Series probably effected his standing with the voters. Kim Kwang-hyeon finished the year 16-4 with a 2.39 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. He struck out 150 and walked 65 in 162 innings pitched.
"If I could rewrite the alphabet, I would put 유 and 아이 together."
Samsung Lions outfielder, Choi Hyeong-woo won the Rookie of the Year award in a landslide. The 25-year old Choi earned 71 of the possible 94 votes. Choi finished his first full season with a .276/.364/.487 line. He managed 19 homers, 71 RBI and 68 runs scored in 384 AB's.
