Weekend Roundup: 9/6 Games

The Korea Times takes a look at the Wyverns recent success. I believe they've won 9 in a row heading into tonight.

While the Joongang Daily takes a glance at this season's attendence. Over 20% of the league's total attendence is from the games in Busan.

On to the roundup...

LG 6, Doosan 5
W - Kyeong Heon-ho (2-0), L - Lim Tae-hoon (11-5)

Wow. This time the Doosan bullpen actually cost CJ Nitkowski a win. Usually its the other way around. CJ tossed 5 innings(99 pitches, 55 strikes) of 2-run(only 1 earned) baseball. He only gave up 2 hits, 4 walks and 1 hit batsman while striking out 4. Doosan actually held a 5-4 advantage in the bottom of the 9th inning, but ace reliever Lim Tae-hoon got into some trouble. LG infielder Park Jong-ho reached on an infield single to lead off the inning. Park was removed for pinch runner Jeong Ju-hyeon. Center fielder Lee Dae-hyeong laid down a sac bunt to move the runner over. The next batter, 3rd baseman Jeong Seong-hoon, drew a walk. DH Roberto Petagine struck out staring for the second out. With 2 outs, pinch hitter Park Yeong-taek singled to right to tie the game at 5 and put the go ahead run at 3rd. LG 1st baseman Choi Dong-su poked a single through the right side of the Doosan infield for a walkoff single and earned himself a beatdown from his teammates. I still can't believe he wasn't injured.

Samsung 4, Seoul Heroes 3
W - Jeong Hyeon-wook (8-4), L - Song Sin-yeong (2-3), S - Kwon Hyeok (6)

The score was tied at 2 in the top of the 8th inning when Samsung started to rally. With runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 outs, Samsung right fielder Park Han-yi hit a seeing-eye single(seriously, it bounced away from 2 different infielders) back up the middle to score the runner from 2nd. Samsung would add another run on a wild pitch from reliever Cho Yong-joon. The real story in this game was the starting pitching. Samsung starter Francisco Cruceta and Heroes starter Lee Hyeon-seung both threw well enough to win, but didn't get enough run support or bullpen help. Cruceta tossed 6 innings(77 pitches, 46 strikes) of 1-run ball. Fast Franky gave up only 1 hit and 3 walks while striking out 2. Lee threw 7 innings(106 pitches, 65 strikes) and gave up 2 runs. Lee surrendered 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3.

SK 7, Lotte 5
W - Lee Seung-ho (6-5), L - Song Seung-joon (12-8), S - Jeon Byeong-doo (8)

This game should have been more watchable than it was. Both starters were chased by the end of the 2nd inning and the two managers had to piece the game together with their bullpen. SK was able to pull it off. Lotte wasn't quite as lucky. All of SK's runs came via the homerun. The knockout punch came in the bottom of the 6th inning with the Wyverns nursing a slim 5-4 advantage. SK left fielder Park Jae-sang connected for a 2-run homer to give the Wyverns a 7-4 advantage. Lotte would make it interesting with rallies in the 7th an 8th innings, but would ultimately come up short. The Giants loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 7th and couldn't deliver. The Giants would actually score in the 8th, but they couldn't get enough baserunners to really threaten. SK 1st baseman Park Jeong-kwon enjoyed a solid day at the plate. Park finished 2-4 with a 3-run homer.

5/5 Roundup and News

Happy Children's Day!

Oh Seung-hwan is the youngest pitcher in the history of the KBO to reach 150 saves.

The KBO sold out all 4 games yesterday. Other than Opening Day, I can't remember the last time this happened for all 4 teams.

LG 12, Doosan 0
W - Shim Soo-chang (3-2), L - Jeong Jae-hoon (2-1)

LG absolutely clobbered Doosan. LG slugger Roberto Petagine, 2nd baseman Park Kyeong-su and 1st baseman Choi Dong-su drove in 3 runs each. Park hit a 3-run homer during LG's 5-run 1st inning rally. Petagine hit a 2-run bomb in the 6th inning. LG starting pitcher Shim Soo-chang was able to cruise to an easy W. Shim tossed 7 shutout innings(85 pitches, 50 strikes). He allowed only 5 hits and 1 hit batsman while striking out 2.

Seoul Heroes 7, KIA 6
W - Kim Seong-hyeon (1-1), L - Yoon Seok-min (0-3)

KIA held a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th inning. Newly annointed closer Yoon Seok-min had shut the Heroes down in the 8th inning and he was asked to hold the lead in the 9th as well. With one out in the 9th, Heroes pinch hitter Oh Yoon doubled to right/center. With two outs and Oh still stranded on 2nd, Heroes left fielder Jeong Su-seong hit a bouncer over the head of KIA 2nd baseman Choi Yong-gyu to score Oh from 2nd and tie the game at 6. The next batter, Heroes center fielder Lee Taek-geun hit a double down the right field line to score Jeong from first and earn Lee a beatdown from his teammates. Cliff Brumbaugh hit a 2-run bomb in the first inning for his 8th homer of the season. KIA DH Hong Se-won and outfielder Na Ju-hwan both hit 2-run homers during the game. Na went deep in the 2nd inning and Hong went yard in the 3rd.

Samsung 4, Hanwha 2
W - Choi Won-Je (2-0), L - Yang Hoon (0-2), S - Oh Seung-hwan (8)

Samsung starter Francisco Cruceta was knocked around early, but the Samsung bullpen worked 6 shutout innings to keep the Lions in the game and eventually earn the W. Cruceta surrendered 2 runs during his 3 innings of work, but it took him 70 pitches to record 9 outs. I guess he wanted all those Children's Day fans to get their money's worth. Ahn Yeong-myeong pitched well enough to earn a W, but a lack of run production from the Hanwha offense and a few rotten innings from the Hanwha bullpen doomed him to a ND. Ahn tossed 6 innings(85 pitches, 52 strikes) of 1-run baseball. He allowed 6 hits and struck out 4. In the 8th inning, Samsung rallied for 3 runs thanks to some shoddy pitching and some worse defense. Samsung right fielder Kang Byeong-gyu hit a ground ball to the left side that was bobbled by two infielders, but no errors were handed out. The next batter, Park Han-yi hit a deep fly ball to center that was completely misplayed by the Hanwha center fielder. When an outfielder turns around twice while tracking a ball, he's probably not coming down with it. Again, Park was given a triple and an RBI instead of an error being awarded. The fly ball tied the game at 2. The next batter, Choi Hyeong-woo, doubled off the right field wall to give Samsung a 3-2 lead. After a sac bunt got Choi into 3rd, Park Jin-man hit a sac fly to left to give Samsung a 4-2 advantage. Oh Seung-hwan tossed a 1-2-3 9th inning to record his 150th career save.

SK 4, Lotte 0
W - Kim Kwang-hyeon (4-0), L - Cho Jeong-hoon (3-3)

Yesterday was vintage Kim Kwang-hyeon. The SK ace tossed 8 1/3 innings(98 pitches, 59 strikes) of shutout baseball. He allowed only 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. This was the ace that everyone was expecting at the WBC. It looks like he's finally got himself back on schedule after being disrupted by the WBC. This was Kim's 3rd straight quality start and his 2nd 8-inning+ start in a row. At the plate, SK 1st baseman Lee Ho-joon turned in a solid effort on Children's Day. Ho finished 2-4 with 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. He tagged Lotte starter Cho Jeong-hoon for a 2-run homer in the 5th inning.

4/15 Roundup and News

The Doosan/Seoul Heroes and Hanwha/Samsung games were both rained out last night.

If you want to read a day late translation of a Naver article from the Korea Times on Yang Joon-hyeok, here you go.

Jason at the Joongang Daily discusses the rising attendance this season.

Am I the only one that thinks a baseball stadium for roughly $40 million sounds cheap? The baseball facilities do need to be upgraded in Korea, but I'd like to see some thought put into it. You know, build a good stadium instead of building a crappy stadium really quickly. I just hope they remember to build adequate parking facilities.

Lotte 1, KIA 0
W - Jon Adkins (1-0), L - Kim Yeong-su (0-1)

If you go back to Sunday's game against Hanwha and include the first 8 innings of this game, Lotte had been shutout for 19 consecutive innings. Kang Min-ho ended the drought in the 9th inning when he drove in pinch runner Choi Man-ho with a game-winning single. KIA's Seo Jae-weong and Lotte's Jang Won-joon were both very good. Seo was a little wild during his 7 innings of work(117 pitches, 76 strikes), but he was able to keep Lotte off the scoreboard. He took a no-hitter into the 6th. Seo allowed 2 hits and 5 walks. He recorded 6 strikeouts on the evening. Jang was a little better. He threw 8 shutout innings(96 pitches, 61 strikes) and he allowed only 5 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 4 Tigers. Royster was grilled about his use of the bullpen after the game. It sounded like the announce crew wanted to know why he pulled Kang Yeong-sik after only 2 batters. He says he was simply playing matchups and that's the way he's always done it. He wanted Adkins to face the righty.

SK 4, LG 4

SK held a 3-0 lead heading into the top of the 6th, but a 4 run rally left the Wyverns staring at a 4-3 deficit. With a runner on first and 1 out, LG 3rd baseman Jeong Dong-su hit a Jeon Byeong-doo pitch over the left field fence to make the score 3-2. Lee Jin-yeong legged out an infield single to put a runner on for Choi Dong-su. Kim Won-hyeong came in to relieve Jeon. Choi promptly hit a 2-run homer to give LG a 4-3 advantage. The score would remain 4-3, until the bottom of the 9th. Woo Gyu-min came in to relieve LG ace Bong Jung-geun. Bong had worked 8 solid innings(111 pitches, 71 strikes). He allowed 3 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks with 8 K's. Pinch hitter, Park Jeong-kwon lead off the inning with an infield single. It was a slow bouncer up the middle that took FOR...E...VER to reach the shortstop. Na Ju-hwan bunted Park over to 2nd. Pinch hitter Kim Jae-hyeon bounced out to short. Jeong-kwon was unable to advance. The next batter, SK 2nd baseman Jeong Geun-woo, drilled a 2-2 pitch up the middle for a base hit. Park was able to score standing up on a fairly mediocre throw from LG centerfielder Lee Jin-yeong to tie the game at 4. On to extras. Nothing remotely interesting happened until the bottom of the 12th. SK had runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs, but quickly grounded into a double play and a force out to end the game.

9/26 - 9/28 Weekend Roundup

*UPDATE* I've been painfully sick for the past three days. As soon as the seasons change in Daegu, I get sick. It's happened every year for 3 years. This year was the worst. I called in sick on Tuesday(I couldn't move), I went to work on Wednesday(I was sent home after proving that I was unable to speak at an audible volume) and I gutted out today. Scores with winners and losers. I've got some catching up to do.

That new intern at the Korea Times was a busy little bee this weekend. He posted not one, but two articles. In the first, the KBO has set an attendence record. Over 5 million fans have attended KBO games this season. In the second, Lee Seung-yeop has continued to hit the baseball well for Yomiuri. It's amazing what happens when ballplayers are given a chance to get healthy.

What we have here is Jerry Royster making good on a promise. When he first took the job, he said he would sing if they made the playoffs. Well. Lotte is in the playoffs and Mr. Royster led the team in a stirring rendition of "부산 갈매기"(Busan sea gull).
