Weekend Transaction Roundup

Samsung starter Bae Yeong-su tried to sign with a Japanese team, but it was revealed that he has Hepatitis B and would likely be denied a visa. He'll likely return to Samsung. I'm not making any of this up.

Nexen looked to deal closer Son Seung-rak to LG for players and cash, but the deal fell through.

Japanese pitchers are hot commodities in the KBO this off season. Samsung is looking to add Kanemura Satoru and SK has signed a pitcher of Korean/Japanese decent named Kim Dae-yu(AKA Kanemura Daiyu). Satoru's nickname is "The Glass Ace." This doesn't fill me with confidence.

Samsung has also signed former MLBer OF/1B Ryan Garko.

Transaction Roundup

The SK Wyverns have signed Taiwanese right-hander Pan Wei-lun. Pan has spent eight years with the Uni-President Lions of the CPBL. He went 11-11 with a 3.19 ERA last year. My guess is he'll join Ken Kadokura in the Wyverns' rotation.

It also sounds like Julio DePaula will return to Hanhwa for 2011.

8/5 Roundup and News

Samsung has signed Tim Redding to replace Brandon Knight. Redding was most recently seen with the Yankees AAA team.

Lotte 4, Doosan 1
W - Kim Su-wan (2-0), L - Lim Tae-hoon (9-8), S - Kang Yeong-sik (1)
Lotte HR - Hong Seong-heun (26), Lee Dae-ho (31), Park Jong-yoon (7) Doosan HR - None

Lotte starter Kim Su-wan pitched about as well as he could have against the Bears and the Lotte bullpen found a way not to blow the game. Kim tossed 5 1/3 innings(87 pitches, 52 strikes) of shutout baseball. Kim gave up five hits and two walks while striking out five. The Lotte offense gave Kim just enough help to win. DH Hong Seong-heun started the game with a solo homer. Hong finished 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Third baseman Lee Dae-ho added a two-run homer in the fourth. Lotte picked up another run in the seventh on a solo homer from first baseman Park Jong-yoon. Lotte reliever Kang Yeong-sik tossed 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the save. Kang allowed two hits and one hit batsman while striking out two.

Nexen 11, Hanhwa 8
W - Kim Seong-hyeon (4-5), L - Julio DePaula (5-10), S - Song Shin-yeon (1)
Nexen HR - None Hanhwa HR - Shin Kyeong-hyeon (7)

This one got messy. Nexen rallied for six runs in the third inning off of Hanhwa starter Julio DePaula. DePaula stays in the country, but Brandon Knight gets released. I'm guessing Hanhwa doesn't want to pay for another foreign pitcher this year. I'm not going into the blow-by-blow, but the inning had everything. Basehits, walks, wild pitches, poor fielding. It was a clinic on how to give away runs. Hanhwa got back into the game with a four-run rally in the seventh inning. The rally was highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of catcher Shin Kyeong-hyeon. Nexen rallied for five more runs in the eighth inning. This rally featured not one, but two key fielding errors by the Hanhwa Eagles. The rally started with two outs and the bases loaded. Hanhwa second baseman Jeong Won-seok couldn't handle a grounder that would have ended the inning. Things snowballed from there. An error by catcher Shin Kyeong-hyeon was almost indescribable. Third baseman Kim Min-woo singled to left with the bases loaded. There was a late throw to the plate and Shin tried to get the runner on second who was drifting off the bag. The throw was high and wide and went into center field. The only problem was that the center fielder was out of position because of the hit to left. The throw rolled to the wall. When the dust settled, the bases were empty and the scoreboard read 11-4. The Hanhwa offense battered a wild Song Seung-rak for four runs in the top of the ninth. Nexen reliever Song Shin-yeong came in for Song and recorded the final out for the vulture save. Lost in this game was a solid effort from Nexen starter Kim Seong-hyeon. Kim tossed six+ innings(107 pitches, 67 strikes) and allowed two-runs. Kim gave up three hits and three walks while striking out six.

SK 5, Samsung 1
W - Ken Kadokura (12-5), L - Bae Yeong-su (5-6)
SK HR - Park Kyeong-wan (13) Samsung HR - None

SK rode a solid start from Kadokura and some early offense to victory. Kadokura threw six innings(87 pitches, 55 strikes) of one-run baseball. Kadokura gave up only two hits and three walks while striking out four. SK scored a pair of runs in the first inning thanks to a two RBI single from first baseman Park Jeong-kwan. Park's single came after a lead off single from center fielder Kim Kang-min and a double from second baseman Jeong Geun-woo. SK picked up another run in the second inning on a solo homer from catcher Park Kyeong-wan.

KIA 11, LG 2
W - Roman Colon (6-5), L - Park Hyeon-joon (0-2)
KIA HR - Choi Hee-seop (18), Lee Jong-beom (4) LG HR - None

The KIA offense came to play. KIA first baseman hit a three-run homer during a five-run fourth inning rally that put this game out of reach for the Zombies. KIA catcher Kim Sang-hoon went 2-3 with a walk, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. KIA starter Roman Colon took advantage of the early cushion and cruised to a W. Colon tossed six innings(95 pitches, 61 strikes) of one-run ball. Colon gave up five hits and one hit batsman while striking out one.

8/4 Roundup and News

Samsung has released Brandon Knight. A replacement hasn't been announced...yet. Knight compiled a 6-5 record during a season that saw him shuttled between the rotation and the bullpen. Knight carried a 4.54 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP in 83 1/3 innings.

Doosan 13, Lotte 4
W - Kim Sun-woo (11-5), L - Ha Joon-ho (0-1)
Doosan HR - Choi Joon-seok 2(16), Lee Seong-yeol (16), Yang Eui-ji (11) Lotte HR - Lee Dae-ho (30)

13-4 makes this game sound close. Lotte got a late homer from Lee Dae-ho and a two-run double from catcher Jang Seong-woo to make this one look not as embarrassing as it was. Doosan starter Kim Sun-woo looked solid against the Giants. Kim tossed seven innings(92 pitches, 69 strikes) of two-run baseball. Kim gave up only seven hits and struck out seven. Lotte starter Ha Joon-ho was chased from game in the third inning after giving up seven runs(only six earned). Doosan DH Choi Joon-seok lead the charge against Ha. Choi homered and doubled off the Lotte starter and finished the game 3-4 with a walk, a double, two homers, six RBIs and four runs scored. Doosan right fielder Lee Seong-yeol went 2-4 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Nexen 5, Hanhwa 2
W - Kim Seong-tae (2-1), L - Yoo Won-sang (5-10), S - Son Seung-rak (11)
Nexen HR - Kim Min-woo (7) Hanhwa HR - Choi Jin-haeng (26)

Nexen got a quality effort from starter Kim Seong-tae and just enough offense to beat the Eagles. Kim threw six innings(94 pitches, 58 strikes) and gave up two runs. Kim allowed four hits and two walks while striking out four. Hanhwa could only muster a third inning RBI double from center fielder Kim Kyeong-un and a solo homer from slugger Choi Jin-haeng in the fourth. The Heroes offense pieced together five one run innings to give Kim the support he needed. Nexen shortstop Kang Jeong-ho went 4-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Catcher Kang Gui-tae went 3-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Nexen closer Son Seung-rak recorded the final four outs in order for the save.

Samsung 5, SK 2
W - Cha Woo-chan (6-1), L - Song Eun-beom (8-4), S - Ahn Ji-man (4)
Samsung HR - Kang Bong-gyu (3) SK - None

Samsung starter Cha Woo-chan threw his sixth consecutive quality start and won for the third time in his last four starts. He's throwing like a guy who's figured something out and the league hasn't caught up yet. Cha threw 6 2/3 innings(112 pitches, 69 strikes) of one run ball against SK. He gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out three. Samsung took advantage of some early SK mistakes and took a team approach to their offense. Five different Lions drove in runs. Samsung reliever Kwon Hyeok ran into trouble in the top of the ninth. With two outs and one run already in, Ahn Ji-man was called to end the threat. Ahn gave up a walk to SK DH Lee Ho-joon to load the bases. Ahn got the next batter, first baseman Choi Dong-su to hit a pop up into foul territory for the final out and the vulture save.

LG 11, KIA 5
W - Kim Kwang-sam (5-4), L - Ahn Yeong-myeong (5-4), S - Lee Dong-hyeon (3)
LG HR - Cho In-seong (21) KIA HR - None

KIA starter Seo Jae-wong just can't catch a break. Seo shutout the Twins for six innings(81 pitches, 50 strikes) and had to watch the LG Zombies batter the KIA bullpen for 11 runs. Seo left the game with a five run lead and went home with a ND. Seo gave up two hits and one walk while striking out five. Six KIA relievers combined to give up eleven runs(ten earned) on twelve hits and two walks. Yuck. Five different Zombies drove in two runs. I wouldn't be surprised if Seo needed to take a few weeks off for mental leave at this point. After flaming out of the major leagues, Seo has had an injury-plagued KBO career. He seems to need weeks off in between each start. He finally throws a quality start and then has to watch the bullpen throw batting practice for three innings. Everything that went KIA's way last year is coming back to get them in a big, big way this year.

Doug Clark? Waived. CJ Nitkowski? Signed

CJ Nitkowski is back for his second tour in Korea. The Nexen Heroes announced that out fielder Doug Clark would get the "plane ticket of shame," while Nitkowski will get the "plane ticket of honor."

CJ has been rehabbing a shoulder injury since he hurt himself in the playoffs last year. I can only imagine the blog entry we'll be getting about this...

Doug Clark posted a .265/.343/.427 slash line and lead the team in homers(12) and runs scored(58). He also drove in 50 and stole 12 bases.

Offseason Loose Change

The Joonang Daily's Choi Min-gyu believes that Lotte can't complete a trade because of their foreign manager. I respectfully disagree. Lotte simply doesn't have that many trade chips and they have one of the higher payrolls in the KBO. They don't have much to give away and don't have much room to add salary.

The LG Twins have signed former Chunichi Dragon outfielder Lee Byung-gyu. Lee has signed a 2-year deal and he'll join a very crowded LG outfield. LG started the off season with Park Yong-taek in center Lee Dae-hyeong in left and Lee Jin-yeong cemented in right. Then, they added Lee Taek-geun from the cash strapped Heroes. It's going to be interesting to see how the Twins keep all these guys happy.

The Joongang Daily offered up a solid look at the comings and goings of players leaving for and returning from military service. SK reliever Chae Byung-yong is completing his military service. Chae was last seen giving up a walk-off homer to end game 7 of the Korean Series. I'm guessing that military service is a welcome vacation for the portly pitcher.

The KBO Declares Heroes Debts Paid, Authorizes Trades

The KBO announced that the Heroes had paid their "franchise fees" and could now freely trade off their players for cash. The Heroes didn't even wait until the ink was dry. They announced three trades almost immediately.

Heroes outfielder Lee Taek-keun(.311/.408/467) was dealt to LG for catcher Park Yeong-bok(.357/.400/.357 in 14 AB's), outfielder Kang Byeong-woo(didn't play with the big club) and cash.

Lefty starter Lee Hyeon-seung(13-10, 4.80 ERA, 1.34 WHIP) was traded to Doosan for reliever Geum Min-cheol(7-2, 4.43 ERA, 1.51 WHIP) and cash. I actually like this deal for the Heroes. Geum is a solid reliever who could be turned into a solid starter.

Samsung finally got a legit ace(possibly) in Jeong Won-sam(5.54 ERA in 91 innings and was shut down in July with shoulder trouble). Jeong was dealt for pitcher Park Seong-hoon(5.17 ERA in 31 innings), 2nd baseman Kim Sang-su(.244/.308/.322) and cash. I'm a little upset to see Kim get traded, but a rotation with Yoon Seong-hwan, Brandon Knight, Francisco Cruceta and Jang is a big improvement over last year.

Post-Christmas Transaction Roundup...

I've had family in town for the past week or so and I've been too busy to give the blog the attention it deserves. Sorry, sports fans.

The trade of Heroes outfielder Lee Taek-geun to LG for players and cash was vetoed. This is the 2nd time in as many seasons that a trade involving the Heroes and cash has been vetoed. Until they finish paying off their "franchise fee," the Heroes are banned from accepting cash in return for players.

The Korea Times gives a solid round up of the comings and goings of the non-Koreans in the KBO. After the success of Rick Guttormson and Aquilino Lopez with KIA, non-Korean pitchers are more popular than ever.

I'm surprised that the Lions re-signed both Francisco Cruceta and Brandon Knight. I guess Ryan Sadowski is going to fill the Jon Adkins role with Lotte. I'm really surprised that Cliff Brumbaugh is looking for a contract. A full season of Gary Glover and Ken Kadokura could given the SK Wyverns insane pitching depth for the 2010 season.
