Opening Day 2011 Roundup and News
Pitchers ruled the day on Saturday. All of these games were 0-0 into at least the fourth inning. I also think this might be the most talented group of non-Korean ballplayers the KBO has ever seen. We may not see the imfamous "plane ticket of shame," for a while this year.
Doosan 4, LG 0
W - Dustin Nippert (1-0), L - Radhames Liz (0-1), S - Lim Tae-hoon (1)
Doosan HR - Kim Dong-ju (1), Kim Hyeon-su (1)
Doosan starter Dustin Nippert threw five innings(78 pitches, 49 strikes) of shut out baseball in his regular season debut. Nippert allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out two.
LG starter Radhames Liz threw well enough, but gave up a couple solo homers and was knocked around for a few one-run rallies. Liz threw six innings(98 pitches, 59 strikes) and gave up all four Doosan runs. He gave up four hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out four.
SK 2, Nexen 0

SK HR - None Nexen HR - None
SK pitching limited the Nexen offense to only three hits and two walks. SK starter Gary Glover threw six innings(101 pitches, 61 strikes) of shutout baseball. The Glove allowed only two hits and a walk while striking out five.
Glover didn't figure in the decision because Nexen starter Brandon Knight was equally impressive. Knight tossed seven innings(109 pitches, 70 strikes) of one-run ball. Knight gave up four hits and one walk while striking out six.
SK broke through in the seventh inning with an RBI single from center fielder Kim Kang-min. SK added an insurance run in the eighth on another RBI single from second baseman Jeong Geun-woo.
Samsung 6, KIA 2 W - Lim Hyeon-joon (1-0), L - Yoon Seok-min (0-1), S - Oh Seung-hwan (1)
Samsung HR - Chae Tae-in (1) KIA HR - None
KIA ace Yoon Seok-min was absolutely cruising until he ran out of gas in the eighth inning. Yoon struck out eight batters and shut the Lions out until starting the eighth. With one run already in, KIA was nursing a slim 2-1 lead. Yoon was lifter for reliever Kwak Jeong-cheol. Kwak loaded the bases for Samsung first baseman Chae Tae-in. Chae clubbed a grand slam over the right field fence to give Samsung a 5-2 advantage. Samsung added an insurance run on a Shin Myeon-cheol RBI single later in the inning.
Samsung closer Oh Seung-hwan recorded a four out save to end the game. It was good to see Oh healthy and throwing strikes...for now. He did make things interesting by walking a pair and giving up a hit, but he was able to escape without KIA inflicting any real damage.
Lotte 6, Hanhwa 0

Lotte HR - Lee Dae-ho (1) Hanhwa HR - None
It was Lotte starter Bryan Corey that looked like the staff ace and Hanhwas' Ryu Hyeon-jin that looked like the guy making his KBO debut.
Corey threw seven shutout innings(97 pitches, 65 strikes) and only allowed seven hits and zero walks. Corey struck out seven Eagles during his start. Ryu Hyeon-jin had a tough time with the Lotte lineup. Ryu cruised through the first three, but struggled in the fourth and found himself chased from the game by the fifth. Ryu threw 4 1/3 innings(102 pitches, 56 strikes) and gave up five runs. Ryu allowed eight hits and five walks while striking out five.
2010 MVP Lee Dae-ho clubbed a solo homer off of Ryu before Ryu made his exit. Lee took a few seconds to watch it leave and then signal to his teammates that he had, in fact, hit his first homer of the season. Let's act like we've been there before Mr. MVP.

Opening Day Starters Announced...
The KBO season starts at 2 PM Korean time Saturday April 2, 2011.
These fine gentlemen will be taking the ball for their respect teams...
Radhames Liz and Dustin Nippert will make their regular season debuts when the LG Twins and Doosan Bears meet at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul.
Gary Glover will start for the 2010 KBO champion SK Wyverns and Brandon Knight will rumble to the bump for the Nexen Heroes.
Samsung lefty Cha Woo-chan will oppose KIA ace Yoon Seok-min.

Doosan rallied for 6 runs in the 3rd inning and that would have been enough to unsure an opening day victory. The Bears delivered 5 extra base hits in the inning, including a 2-run bomb from 2nd baseman Goh Yeong-min and a solo blast from DH Lee Seong-yeol. Aquilino Lopez struggled through 6 innings. He allowed 6 runs on 10 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4. Doosan left fielder Kim Hyeon-su is off to a good start in defending his batting title. He went 4-4, all singles, with 2 runs scored. Doosan starter Kelvin Jiminez pitched well enough to earn the W and not get sent home. Jiminez tossed 5 innings(99 pitches, 67 strikes) of 2-run ball. He allowed 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 3. 2nd baseman Ahn Chi-hong was the tallest midget for KIA. He hit a 2-run double off Jiminez in the 4th inning.

Ken Kadokura picked up where he left off. Kadokura 7 solid innings(101 pitches, 62 strikes) of 2-run baseball. He allowed only 8 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. Hanhwa 1st baseman Kim Tae-wan tagged Kadokura for a 2-run homer in the 1st inning and that was the last run the Eagles would get. Jose Capellan didn't earn a plane ticket home. He also tossed 7 innings(110 pitches, 64 strikes), but was, um, effectively wild. He allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and 4 walks with 5 Ks. After Kim's 2-run bomb in the top of the 1st, the Wyverns answered with a 2-run rally of their own. SK loaded the bases with 2 outs. Capellan uncorked a wild pitch to score SK DH Kim Jae-hyeon from 3rd. After a walk to re-load the bases, Capellan threw another wild one in the dirt to score 1st baseman Park Jeong-kwon from 3rd. SK added the go ahead run in the 2nd inning when 2nd baseman Jeong Geun-woo hit a soft single into left to score catcher Park Kyeong-won from 3rd. That was all the scoring SK needed or would get.

The Twins drew first blood on a sac fly in the first inning from newly acquired outfielder, Lee Byeong-gyu. The Lions struck back in the 2nd inning with a 2-run homer from catcher Jin Kab-yong. LG rallied for 3 more runs in the top of the 5th thanks to a 3-run bomb off the bat of shortstop Oh Ji-hwan. Facing a 4-2 deficit in the 6th inning, Samsung 2nd baseman Shin myeong-cheol hit a seeing-eye single up the middle to score first baseman Chae Tae-in from 2nd base. The Lions loaded the bases in the 8th inning with 1 out. Shin Myeong-cheol stepped to the plate with runners in scoring position and made LG pay again. Shin drilled a base hit into left field to score a pair and give Samsung a 5-4 lead. In the top of the 9th with 2 out, victory appeared certain. Samsung closer Oh Seung-hwan had two strikes on LG slugger Lee Jin-yeong. Lee took an 0-2 pitch over the right field fence to tie the game at 5. The Lions went down quietly in the bottom of the ninth. On to extra innings. In the top of the 11th, LG put together a rally. With one out, 3rd baseman Jeong Seong-hoon drew a walk. Then, slugger Lee Jin-yeong hit a bloop single to left to put runners on 1st and 3rd. Lee advanced to 2nd on defensive indifference. Catcher Cho In-seong struck out swinging for the 2nd out. Oh Ji-hwan was walked to load the bases. 2nd baseman Park Yong-geun hit a seeing-eye single up the middle to score a pair and give LG a 7-5 advantage. Sadowski gave up another 2-run homer to Heroes catcher Park Gui-tae in the 2nd inning, but managed to get through the next three innings without any additional damage. He only gave up 5 hits and struck out 3. This game wasn't without controversy. With one out in the bottom of the 9th, Kim Ju-chan hit a fly ball to deep right field. The ball either hit the top of the wall or was interfered with by a fan. Either way, the hit was ruled a double and Kim had to go back to second. KBO Throws Out the First Pitch on April 4
The KBO's 2009 Opening Day will be on Saturday, April 4 according to this article from the KT. 2 time defending champ, SK, will open the season at home against Hanhwa. Doosan will face KIA in Seoul. Samsung will take on LG in Colorful Daegu and Lotte will open the season in Busan against The Heroes.
I'm not sure what The Heroes will do for sponsor this year. I keep seeing the old Woori logo used in articles about the team. I'm starting to get the impression that the KBO has painted themselves into a corner with this team. Actually, I'm just happy we still have 8 teams.
