I just got back from a glorious 18-day vacation in Chicagoland. I'm not going to lie. I've been totally half-assing the KBO blog during this month. I'm refreshed, back in Daegu and totally ready to finish the stretch run of the season and blog into the playoffs.... At least until I go on vacation in September during Chuseok.
First order of business. News.
The KBO held their rookie draft last week. Hanhwa took Gwangju high-schooler Yoo Chang-sik with the first overall pick. I really wouldn't be surprised to see him pitching in the rotation next year. The only problem I have with this kid is, well, he sounds like a dick. I also have a hard time believing that he had a $1 million dollar offer from anyone. That's a huuuuge bonus for an international signing and he'd be insane to turn it down. "A million bucks to actually have a chance to develop my talents? Nah. I'd rather slave for seven years with a rotten ball club, make 1/10th of what I'm worth and then, if I'm lucky I haven't blown out my shoulder, possibly get a chance to play overseas."
Hanhwa signed a new foreign guy. Cuban national Francisley Bueno made his KBO debut last Thursday and got completely lit up. Welcome to the KBO, Francisley.
Finally in Hanhwa news, Ryu Hyeon-jin broke the world record for quality starts when he recorded his 23rd consecutive quality start. The previous record of 22 was held by Cardinals' pitchers Bob Gibson and Chris Carpenter.

W - Oh Jae-yeong (1-1), L - Lee Dong-hyeon (5-1), S - Son Seung-rak (20)
Nexen HR - Song Ji-man (13) LG HR - Park Yong-taek (8)
LG held a slim 4-3 lead in the eight inning, but Nexen right fielder Song Ji-man clubbed a two-run homer to put the Heroes on top. Song finished the game 2-4 with three RBIs and a run scored. Nexen closer Son Seung-rak recorded the final four outs in order for the save. LG DH Park Yong-taek lead the Zombies offense by going 2-5 with a homer, one RBI and two runs scored.

Ken Kadokura threw the ball as well as he has in a while for SK on Thursday. Ken tossed seven innings(104 pitches, 72 strikes) of one-run baseball. Ken allowed four hits and one walk while striking out eight. He left the game with a 4-1 lead in the eighth and had to watch the SK bullpen lose it. The first run of the inning scored on an RBI single from first baseman Jang Seong-ho. Left fielder Choi Jin-haeng hit a two-run bomb to tie the game at four. DH Kim Tae-wan singled, stole second and scored on a single from right fielder Lee Sang-hoon to give Hanhwa their first lead of the game. Oh, I forgot to mention. All of this happened with two outs. Hanhwa reliever Park Jeong-jin threw a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.
Samsung 9, KIA 5

Samsung pummeled KIA starter Yang Hyeon-jong on Thursday. Yang has been one of the few bright spots for KIA this year, but he's also been insanely erratic. He'll either throw seven innings of one-run ball or he'll throw three innings and give up five runs. The best part is, there's really no pattern. Samsung reliever Jeong Hyeon-wook came into the game during the fifth inning after starter Jang Won-sam was pulled due to a high pitch count. Jeong stuck around for 3 1/3 innings. He only allowed one hit batsman and struck out five. The Samsung offense was lead by left fielder Choi Hyeong-woo. Choi went 2-4 with a walk, a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored. Second baseman Shin Myeong-cheol chipped in with a 3-5, one homer, two RBI, one run scored effort.
Lotte 8, Doosan 6
W - Kim Il-yeop (2-1), L - Jeong Jae-hoon (6-4), S - Kim Sa-yul (3)
Lotte HR - Lee Dae-ho (40), Jeon Joon-woo (13) Doosan HR - Lee Seong-yeol (19), Kim Dong-ju (19), Choi Joon-seok (18), Yang Eui-ji (16)
If Doosan could've had a few guys on base when they homered, they probably would have won. Doosan had opportunities to put the game away, but no lead is really safe against the Lotte Giants. Doosan held a 5-3 advantage in eighth inning, but Lotte rallied for five runs. Center fielder Jeon Joon-woo blasted a three-run homer during the rally. At some point, KBO teams have to start walking Lee Dae-ho. Lee homered again and finished 1-3 with a walk and two RBIs.

Lessons Learned From Watching KBO Baseball Last Night
Ryu Hyeon-jin is the best pitcher in the KBO. We've got a Steve Carlton situation in Hanhwa. Could Ryu win the MVP this year? It's possible. He'll likely keep Hanhwa out of 8th place, but does it really matter? Is there that much more shame in an 8th place finish than a 7th place finish? Ryu struck out nine Nexen Heroes last night during a three-hit, one-walk complete game shutout victory over the Heroes. Hanhwa managed to scratch out a 2-0 victory. The way Ryu was pitching, that makes it sound like Nexen was in the game. Nexen almost found a way to score negative runs last night.
The shallow end of the SK bullpen is really, really shallow. SK dropped last night's game to Samsung 14-1. Samsung starter Jang Won-sam tossed six shutout innings. Jang gave up six hits and two walks while striking out eight. Samsung DH/RBI machine Choi Hyeong-woo drove in four more runs while going 2-3 with a walk, a double, a homer and two runs scored. Samsung shortstop Kim Sang-su finished 3-5 with a pair of RBIs. SK ace Kim Kwang-hyeon looked awfully human last night. Kim was battered for four runs on seven hits and three walks during his five innings of work. He did manage to strike out five batters before getting the hook.
Lotte proved that it's okay to give up six runs in the first inning as long as they score seven. Lotte beat Doosan 10-7, but 13 of the 17 runs came in the first inning. Oh and neither team homered in the first. Both kept the line moving. Only three Doosan Bears starters DIDN'T have at least two hits last night. Giants shortstop Park Ki-hyeok drove in three runs thanks to a double with the bases loaded. Giants DH Hong Seong-heun did hit a 3-run homer in the 2nd inning that proved to be the difference on the scoreboard. Hong finished 2-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Lotte Reliever Lim Kyeong-wan recorded his third save. He might have found himself a job as the Lotte closer...until he blows a save in horrifying fashion.
KIA is going to let Aquilino Lopez throw until his shoulder flies apart. Lopez tossed an 8-inning complete game in a losing effort. He was battered for five runs on twelve hits and two hit batsmen. He only needed 122 pitches to finish the game. LG broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the 8th inning on an RBI double from 2nd baseman Kwon Yong-kwan. The worst part wasn't that the double came with two outs, the worst part was the wild pitch that came right before it to move the runner into scoring position. Kwon went 3-4 with two RBIs. Someone wants to move out of the #9 slot!

The Season Can't Start Fast Enough
Yes, that's Hanhwa ace Ryu Hyeon-jin giving bunny ears to LG ace Bong Jung-geun during the KBO's Media Day on Monday. I think these guys are just about done with spring training.
The pre-season games are over and the real season is set to start on Saturday...yellow dust permitting. Lotte "won" the pre-season by winning 10 of 12 games. Given the state of the Giants, Jerry Royster is going to wish these games counted when he goes in for his next contract negotiation. Assuming he's invited to his next contract negotiation. Samsung came in second with an 8-5 record.

Park Chan-ho, King of the Wild Frontier
Park Chan-ho stopped by Hanhwa Eagles camp this week and gave a few pointers to the K-Monster, ace Ryu Hyeon-jin. He's also working on a kickass beard. He might say he doesn't want to work out of the bullpen, but his beard says otherwise. That's a fierce "closin' beard" if I ever saw one.

KBO Hosts a Benefit Dinner, Hilarity Insues...
I believe it was a dinner to honor the retiring Hanhwa Eagles manager, but I'm not entirely sure. All I know is LG ace Bong Jung-geun can wail. Bong performed a duet with Shin Eun-jin. The pair brought the house down by singing "Sweet Caroline." Meanwhile.........
A still-pissed off Ryu Hyeon-jin looks on...menacingly. Is it just me or is he about 3 seconds away from quitting baseball and taking a job as a top henchman for a Bond villain?

Hanhwa Ace Upset, Declares War on Management
Daejeon, South Korea - Disgruntled Hanhwa ace Ryu Hyeon-jin has announced that he is breaking free from the KBO's oppressive collective bargaining agreement and has declared war on any and all involved with KBO management. "Losing Lee Beom-ho was the last straw. It's bad enough that we came in last place, but I'm surrounded by guys who couldn't handle the Korean Celebrity Baseball League. I understand why Kim Taek-gyun left. He's got a family to feed...and then there's his posse, but Lee was the HEART of our team. How many games are we going to win next year? 20? I'm supposed to waste my already surgically repaired arm on this? This time...they've gone too far."
The Hanhwa ace jumped into the tank and, despite repeated knocks, refused to come out. Our reporter on the scene ventured near the tank, but could only hear what could be described as the sound of "someone softly sobbing into a puffy vest." Ryu's representatives could not be reached for comment.
Meanwhile, fearing the worst from Ryu's anger, Hanhwa teammates handed out supplies to the terrified populace in Daejon. One Eagle was quoted as saying, "It's the least we can do. I mean, we can't win games or anything, so we should try to help out as best we can. Just get this stuff handed out...and pray for the best." TSOKB reporting.

5/27 Roundup and News
I've got some catching up to do with the local sports rags. The Joonang Ilbo has been especially busy. First, they wrote this fluff profile on Rick Guttormson. I would have at least mentioned the drug testing.
The all-star game balloting has opened. Thrilling.
The games are taking longer this year.
Lee Ji-mo has signed with the LA Dodgers. I'm not sure what to make of this. He's finished his military service and Lotte is desperate for pitching. Hmmm, he's either got talent or he slept with someone's daughter and he wants to escape the country.
If you read this piece, you'd think Ryu Hyeon-jin was completely awful. He's had a few rough starts, but alarm bells aren't ringing. I'm not going to worry until there's a decline in his K numbers. I'm willing to chalk this up to bad luck.

The Heroes must have noticed something about Kim Sun-woo and catcher Yong Deok-han. The Heroes stole 7 bases in this game. 6 of them came with Kim and Yong as the Doosan battery. In the 5th inning, the Heroes center fielder Jeong Su-seong stole home. Kim Sun-woo threw a pitch that was neither a pitchout or a regular pitch. The catcher was in position for a pitch out, but the ball went 5 feet over the umpires' head. It was just bizarre. Heroes 3rd baseman Hwang Jae-gyun stole 4 by himself, but he didn't score a single run. That's tough to do. It wasn't the stolen bases that doomed Kim Sun-woo, it was the homers. Kim surrendered a 2-run bomb to catcher Kang Gui-tae in the 4th inning and slugger Cliff Brumbaugh hit a solo shot in the 5th inning. Heroes starting pitcher Le Hyeon-seung was able to cruise for 6 innings(99 pitches, 59 strikes). He allowed 1 run on 6 hits and 4 walks while striking out 3.

W - Aquilino Lopez (2-2), L - CJ Nitkowski (0-2), S - Yoo Dong-hoon (1)
I, for one, can't wait for the 5 paragraph blog post from CJ about how he pitched well in this game, but still got stuck with the loss. It hasn't happened...yet, but I'm maintaining a 24-hour watch on his blog. It's going to be epic. I don't care how he rationalizes it this time. Allowing 3 of 4 runners to reach base is not a good outing, especially when its 2 walks and 1 HBP. That's how guys get released.
Senor Smoke has been difficult to figure out. He's looked either great or awful, but not much in between. He looked like a legit ace last night. Lopez tossed 8 innings(112 pitches, 68 strikes) of 2-run baseball. He allowed only 6 hits, 1 walk and 1 hit batsman while striking out 4. Ken Kadokura enjoyed a solid effort, but a lack of offensive support and a shaky SK bullpen(I'm looking at you, CJ) cost him a decision. Kadokura tossed 6 1/3 innings(118 pitches, 73 strikes) of 2-run baseball. He allowed 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 6. With the score tied 2-2 in the 7th with 1 out, CJ Nitkowski was brought in to keep KIA off the board. He hit the first batter he saw in the thigh and he walked 2nd baseman Kim Jong-kuk. The look on the SK's manager's face when he allowed the walk was priceless. It appeared to say, "If I reported this guy for swine flu, would they deport him?" CJ got a ground ball for the 2nd out, but SK only got the force out at 1st, instead of the double play. CJ promptly walked Choi Hee-seop to load the bases and was removed from the country, erm, the game. KIA's Kim Sang-hyeon drilled a Yoon Gil-hyeon offering into center field and drove in the go-ahead runs. I was surprised to see Yoo Dong-hoon throw the 9th inning for KIA. He threw a scoreless inning to earn the save, but I was wondering where Yoon Seok-min was.

W - Ahn Yeong-myeong (3-3), L - Bae Yong-su (1-7)
Bae Yong-su surrendered solo homers to 2 of the first 3 batters he faced. He's awful and I feel old. If this were a softball team, guys would be telling him, "You know, next year you might want to try an easier league." Center fielder Kang Dong-woo and DH Kim Tae-wan both hit a pair of homers. Hanhwa starter Ahn Yeong-myeong pitched about as well as he usually does, but the anemic Samsung offense helped him out more than they should have. Ahn tossed 5 2/3 innings of 2-run baseball. He allowed 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. This game was an absolute snooze to watch. Between the Lions being completely awful and Carlos Quentin suffering a hell injury, this has been a rough season for me. Moving on...

Rick Bauer! Welcome to the KBO! The Rick had a rough first outing, but probably won't be sent home...yet. He threw 5 innings(89 pitches, 59 strikes) and surrendered 4 runs. He allowed 7 hits and only 1 walk while striking out 5. Karim Garcia gave Rick a rude reception. The Lotte slugger hit a solo homer off of the KBO newcomer in the 4th inning. I think Bauer could fill the Chris Oxspring/innings eater role for this LG rotation. Anything more would be asking too much. 6-5 makes this game sound closer than it really was. If it weren't for a few fake rallies in the late innings, this game could have been 6-3. Lotte starting pitcher Lee Yong-hoon was solid, but not spectacular. He tossed 6 innings(90 pitches, 52 strikes) 0f 3-run baseball. He allowed 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4. Jon Adkins recorded a 5 out save, but looked shaky during a fake rally in the 9th inning.

What's Up With Ryu?
Hanhwa ace, Ryu Hyeon-jin and film/tv star Kim Ha-neul enjoyed an ice skating date on Christmas eve.
I did a 2 minute search and this was the closest I could come to any kind of scandalous shot of Ha-neul. Weak, I know.

6/3 Roundup and News
According to the Korea Times, the only way to win gold medals isn't by scoring runs. It's by striking chumps out! I don't think the Korean team would be in that much trouble if they went with Son Min-han, Chae Byeong-yong and Bong Jung-gun as their top three starters and used Kim and Ryu in special situations.
Speaking of Ryu Hyeon-jin, he's felt something in his elbow. Uh-oh.
Baek Cha-seung didn't fare that well against the cubs.

This game was a washout. Rain, rain, go away.

These teams combined for 7 hits and 6 walks. Combined. Lotte mounted a two-run, error assisted rally in the 3rd inning. Kim Ju-chan(.277/.358/.315) delivered an RBI single, while Lee Dae-ho(.330/.425/.524, 45 RBI) drove in the second run with a sacrifice. Doosan scored its only run on an RBI double from Kim Hyeon-su(.350/.442/.487).
Marty McCleary(4.78 ERA, 1.49 WHIP) showed he was good for something other than bringing the pretzels to Jerry Royster's poker game last night. McCleary worked 8 1/3 strong innings(116 pitches, 69 strikes) allowing only one run on 4 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 4.
LG 7, Samsung 1

Tom Shearn's(In Korean, 션) Samsung debut was fairly forgettable. He pitched well until he started giving up runs. In the 5th inning, the floodgates opened and he was chased from the game. His final statline was 4 innings of work(92 pitches, 57 strikes) while allowing 5 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks. He added two strikeouts. LG ace, Bong Jung-gun(3.14 ERA, 1.27 WHIP), pitched like the seasoned vet that he is. Dr. Bong worked 7 strong innings(114 pitches, 72 strikes) allowing only 1 run on 5 hits and 1 walk. He struck out 7.

The game ball goes to LG's Ahn Chi-yong(.384/.463/.661). Ahn went 2-4 with a homer, 1 RBI, 2 runs scored and a stolen base. The Yang Joon-hyeok comeback continued last night. Yang(.225/.330/.338) was one of the few bright spots for Samsung last night. He went 2-3 with a walk and an RBI triple(!). There's still tread on them tires! The triple was the 24th of his career.

10 pitchers were used in this contest and not a single pitcher lasted more than 3 innings. This game was managed like an elimination game of the Korean playoffs if both teams had burned through their pitching staffs in the previous game.
Doug Clark(.313/.396/.602, 14 HR, 59 runs scored, 42 RBI) took a tough tumble on a ball in the first inning. It looked like he would have to come out, but like the warrior that he is(we're talking Conan with a bat here), he stayed in the game. I get the impression that he's popular in the Hanhwa clubhouse. There seemed to be a lot of guys out there to check on him.
KIA's Kim Won-seop(.346/.445/.418) had an interesting stat line. 0-4 with 4 walks. Honestly, I have no idea who to give a game ball to here. Nothing that remarkable happened offensively, on the mound or on D. Since I'm pressed, I'll give it to Hanhwa's Kim Tae-gyun(.342/.435/.711, 15 HR, 46 RBI) for going 2-3 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
Speaking of Ryu Hyeon-jin, he's felt something in his elbow. Uh-oh.

These teams combined for 7 hits and 6 walks. Combined. Lotte mounted a two-run, error assisted rally in the 3rd inning. Kim Ju-chan(.277/.358/.315) delivered an RBI single, while Lee Dae-ho(.330/.425/.524, 45 RBI) drove in the second run with a sacrifice. Doosan scored its only run on an RBI double from Kim Hyeon-su(.350/.442/.487).
Marty McCleary(4.78 ERA, 1.49 WHIP) showed he was good for something other than bringing the pretzels to Jerry Royster's poker game last night. McCleary worked 8 1/3 strong innings(116 pitches, 69 strikes) allowing only one run on 4 hits and 3 walks. He struck out 4.

W - Bong Jung-gun(6-5), L - Tom Shearn(0-1)
Tom Shearn's(In Korean, 션) Samsung debut was fairly forgettable. He pitched well until he started giving up runs. In the 5th inning, the floodgates opened and he was chased from the game. His final statline was 4 innings of work(92 pitches, 57 strikes) while allowing 5 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks. He added two strikeouts. LG ace, Bong Jung-gun(3.14 ERA, 1.27 WHIP), pitched like the seasoned vet that he is. Dr. Bong worked 7 strong innings(114 pitches, 72 strikes) allowing only 1 run on 5 hits and 1 walk. He struck out 7.
