Jeong Dae-hyeon decided not to make the jump to the Baltimore Orioles and inked a four-year deal with the Lotte Giants. He'll likely assume the ninth inning duties for Lotte next year.
Also, it was ruled that Park Chan-ho will be eligible to pitch next year for Hanhwa. The rule had been that players who went overseas prior to 1999 were subject to the draft. Park would have had to wait until the 2012 draft in August before being eligible, but the rule was waived so Park can play next season. He's now free to negotiate with the Hanhwa Eagles. His contract should be taken care of fairly quickly and it wouldn't be a shock to see him sign before the weekend.

Free Agent Grab Bag Part II
That was fast. Only five free agents remain after about 10 days of free agency.
The biggest moves came over the weekend. Nexen spent big and signed LG outfielder/first baseman Lee Taek-geun to a four-year, 5 Billion won contract.
LG also lost reliever Son Shin-yeong to Hanhwa in a 3-year, 1.3 billion won deal.
Lotte reliever Lim Kyeong-wan signed with SK in a three-year deal worth 1.1 billion won.
Lee Dae-ho announced his intention to pursue a career overseas. It's been speculated that the NPB's Orix Buffaloes will be the team to land Lee. Lee rejected a four-year deal worth 10 billion won from the Lotte Giants over the weekend. It's believed Orix has offered a two year, 7 billion won deal.

Kim Tae-gyun Sings a 1-Year Deal With Hanhwa
Free agent first baseman Kim Tae-gyun has signed a one-year deal to return to the Hanhwa Eagles. Kim spent the last two years with the Chiba Lotte Marines of the Japanese NPB. Kim had success in his debut season by blasting 21 homers and driving in 92 runs, but struggled with injuries and poor performance in 2011.
Kim spent 2001-09 with the Hanhwa Eagles. He maintained a .310 batting average with 181 homers and 701 RBIs and was one of the more terrifying middle-of-the-order hitters in the KBO.

KIA ace Yoon Seok-min wants to make the move to MLB and he wants to hire Scott Boras as his agent.
Free agent/Giants slugger Lee Dae-ho says he'll stay with Lotte if he stays in Korea. He's still weighing options between Lotte, Japan and searching for a deal in the US.
Lee Seung-yeop sounds like he's ready to make his return to the KBO next year. Lee left for Japan after setting the single-season homerun record in Asia. He struggled with injuries recently and spent last season with the Orix Buffaloes. Actually, he spent most of the year not playing for Orix. He's been linked with a return to Samsung for a few months.

How can LG fall to seventh place? By playing baseball poorly.
Donga Sports wants to see a Kim Kwang-hyeon/Yoon Seok-min match up in the playoffs. Could happen, but Kim could still be rehabbing in the bullpen.
Sports Seoul takes a look at the 5th place Hanhwa Eagles. These guys aren't that bad! They won't contend for a playoff spot, but they're competent.

These two teams are basically fighting over sixth place. Doosan has a one game lead over LG. Doosan's sudden collapse has been one of the more inexplicable stories of the 2011 season.

Samsung got back in the game with a two-run bomb from slugger Choi Hyeong-woo. This blast made Choi the first batter in the KBO to get to 30 homers this season. Choi owns a .335/.425/.614 slash line this year with 30 homers and 114 RBIs. He's probably this year's MVP.

My Daily takes a look at KIA giving reliever Han Ki-joo a starting assignment. "Hey! I've got an idea! Let's give the guy who missed almost two full years a job that's going to put MORE stress on his arm! GIVE ME A RAISE!"
Someone at Osen wants to compare Hanhwa great Guh Dae-seong to Denny Bautista because they can both start, relieve and close.
Someone at Osen also thinks that Lotte manager Yang Seung-ho should be the team's MVP. This person must have been in a coma for April and May.
Osen does redeem themselves by giving us a preview of the possible winners of the KBO's Gold Glove at shortstop. A trio of smaller guys are the frontrunners for the award this year. Osen likes Samsung's Kim Sang-su, Hanhwa's Lee Dae-su and KIA's Kim Seon-bin. If I had to, I'd probably rank them 1. Lee, 2. Kim Sang-su and 3. Kim Seon-bin, but post-season performances often weigh heavy in the minds of voters.

He's only given up 18 baserunners in 17 innings this year, but walks might be a problem. He's allowed nine of them already.
Nexen third baseman Kim Min-woo broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a two-run homer and the Nexen offense picked up a few more insurance runs in the late innings to earn the W. Doosan went out of their way to help the Heroes by committing four errors.

9/15 Roundup and News
Naver Sports does a super long feature on Masaichi Kaneda. Otherwise known as Kim Kyeong-hong on the peninsula. He was born in Japan, but both his parents were Korean. Kaneda(Kim) was perhaps the most dominant pitcher in the history of the NPB. I might try to beg Simon into doing a full translation because the article is a very in depth look at his career. The Hanhwa Eagles have signed another new non-Korean player to replace the recently cut Oneli Perez. Right-handed journeyman Denny Bautista should be joining the Eagles soon. Bautista was last seen in the major leagues in 2010 with the San Francisco Giants. He had spent all of 2011 with the Seattle Mariners AAA affiliate.

6/5 Roundup and News
Hanhwa is dominating the news in the beginning of the week. Karim Garcia has finally arrived in Korea. Also, ace Ryu Hyeon-jin's shoulder is hurting.

Kim gave up three hits and four walks while striking out five.

Lee's best days are in the rear view mirror, but he still has some pop in his bat. Still in the seventh, KIA loaded the bases and pushed across a run with a bunt single from speedy center fielder Lee Yong-gyu to take a 2-1 lead.
KIA starter Yoon Seok-min threw eight innings(122 pitches, 76 strikes) and only gave up the one run. Yoon surrendered two hits and five walks while striking out six.
KIA called on starter Aquilino Lopez to throw the ninth. Lopez responded by giving up a walk and a base hit, but he struck out the other three guys he faced to finish the game.
SK starter Jim Magrane threw six shutout innings(78 pitches, 49 strikes), but was stuck with a ND. Magrane gave up four hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out six.

This game was pretty ugly for the LG Twins. Ugly fielding. Ugly defense. Not much offense until they got well into the Lotte bullpen. This game was gross on all fronts for the Twins.

LG turned to reliever Han Hee to get out of the jam...and he responded by given up three more runs in short order.

Samsung starter Ken Kadokura tossed 5 2/3 innings(88 pitches, 55 strikes) of one-run baseball(none earned). Kadokura gave up five hits and one walk while striking out two.
The Samsung defense allowed Hanhwa to cut the lead to 3-2 thanks to some shoddy D from second baseman Shin Myeong-cheol. Errors in both the sixth and seven innings lead to Hanhwa runs.
Thankfully, the Samsung bullpen was able to shut the door. Samsung closer Oh Seung-hwan threw a perfect ninth inning for the save.

Doosan starter Seo Dong-hwan threw well enough for a guy making his first KBO start since finishing his miliary service. Seo threw five innings(70 pitches, 43 strikes) of one-run ball. Seo allowed three hits and two walks while striking out three. His only real mistake occurred when SK shortstop Park Jin-man tagged him for a solo homer.
Four Doosan relievers combined to throw four innings of no-hit baseball and nail down the W for the Bears.

Hanhwa tied the game at seven in the top of the fourth when DH Jeong Seong-ho hit an RBI ground out.
Hanhwa picked up a few insurance runs in the sixth and seventh before Doosan retook the lead with a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh. First baseman Choi Joon-seok started the rally with a solo homer. Third baseman Kim Jae-ho and Jeong Su-bin hit RBI singles to push the lead to 10-9.
Hanhwa re-took the lead in the top of the ninth with a two-run rally. The Eagles actually tied the game on a dropped third strike. Right fielder Choo Seung-woo was on second with one out. Pinch hitter Oh Seon-jin struck out, but the ball bounced away from Doosan catcher Yang Eui-ji. Choo raced around from second and Oh advanced all the way to third while Doosan struggled to locate the baseball. Oh scored on a base hit from center fielder Kang Dong-woo.
Hanhwa reliever Oneli Perez put runners on second and third with one out. Hanhwa called on Kim Hyeok-min to get the Eagles out of the jam. Kim got Jeong Su-bin to hit a grounder at second and Hanhwa was able to get the runner at the plate. Kim struck out left fielder Lee Jong-wook to end the game.

Nexen reliever Son Seung-rak recorded the final six outs for the save.
Nexen starter Kim Seong-tae threw the ball fairly well. Kim tossed six innings(99 pitches, 58 strikes) of two-run ball. Kim gave up four hits and two walks while striking out nine.

Hanhwa jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third inning thanks in large part to a three-run homer by shortstop Lee Dae-su. Doosan answered back in the bottom of the third with a five-run rally of their own. Two runs scored on an error by pitcher Julio DePaula and two runs scored on a triple by center fielder Jeong Su-bin.
Hanhwa tied the game at seven in the top of the fourth when DH Jeong Seong-ho hit an RBI ground out.
Hanhwa picked up a few insurance runs in the sixth and seventh before Doosan retook the lead with a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh. First baseman Choi Joon-seok started the rally with a solo homer. Third baseman Kim Jae-ho and Jeong Su-bin hit RBI singles to push the lead to 10-9.
Hanhwa re-took the lead in the top of the ninth with a two-run rally. The Eagles actually tied the game on a dropped third strike. Right fielder Choo Seung-woo was on second with one out. Pinch hitter Oh Seon-jin struck out, but the ball bounced away from Doosan catcher Yang Eui-ji. Choo raced around from second and Oh advanced all the way to third while Doosan struggled to locate the baseball. Oh scored on a base hit from center fielder Kang Dong-woo.
Hanhwa reliever Oneli Perez put runners on second and third with one out. Hanhwa called on Kim Hyeok-min to get the Eagles out of the jam. Kim got Jeong Su-bin to hit a grounder at second and Hanhwa was able to get the runner at the plate. Kim struck out left fielder Lee Jong-wook to end the game.

5/7 Roundup and News
Between a badly sprained ankle(lucky it wasn't broken) and a holiday, I'm terribly late this week. Sorry, dear reader, but it will probably happen again.
Hanhwa has issued not one, but two plane tickets of shame to Julio DePaula and Oneli Perez. I'm surprised they actually want to spend money to bring in two new guys instead of just sucking with the original two guys.

Samsung starter Bae Yeong-su continued his recent streak of competent pitching. Bae threw 5 1/3 innings(95 pitches, 59 strikes) and gave up all three LG runs. Bae surrendered six hits and four walks while striking out four.
LG ace Bong Jung-geun made his first start of the 2011 season and it was completely forgettable. Bong stuck around for only 4 2/3 innings of work(87 pitches, 53 strikes). Bong allowed four runs on six hits, two walks, and three(!) hit batsmen. Bong managed to strike out three.
Samsung center fielder Bae Yeong-seop lead the Lions' offense by going 3-5 with one RBI, one run scored and a stolen base.

After giving up a three-run bomb to right fielder Son Ah-seop, Nieve felt the need to put a ball in Lee Dae-ho’s back. Lee didn’t take kindly to Nieve taking out his frustrations. Lee gestured towards the mound and both benches cleared. No punches were thrown, but Nieve was quickly removed from the game.
Nieve lasted 4 1/3 innings(72 pitches, 43 strikes) and gave up six runs. Nieve allowed seven hits, two walks and the one hit batter while striking out two.
The Lotte bullpen let the Bears back into the game(I’m looking at YOU, Kim Sa-yul) and the Giants found themselves trailing 7-6 in the ninth inning. Lee got some measure of revenge by hitting a two-run homer that put the Giants on top, 8-7.
Bryan Corey threw a scoreless inning of relief. I’m not 100% sure, but I think that after the last pitch Corey’s arm actually detached itself from his body in protest.

8/20 Roundup and News
I just got back from a glorious 18-day vacation in Chicagoland. I'm not going to lie. I've been totally half-assing the KBO blog during this month. I'm refreshed, back in Daegu and totally ready to finish the stretch run of the season and blog into the playoffs.... At least until I go on vacation in September during Chuseok.
First order of business. News.
The KBO held their rookie draft last week. Hanhwa took Gwangju high-schooler Yoo Chang-sik with the first overall pick. I really wouldn't be surprised to see him pitching in the rotation next year. The only problem I have with this kid is, well, he sounds like a dick. I also have a hard time believing that he had a $1 million dollar offer from anyone. That's a huuuuge bonus for an international signing and he'd be insane to turn it down. "A million bucks to actually have a chance to develop my talents? Nah. I'd rather slave for seven years with a rotten ball club, make 1/10th of what I'm worth and then, if I'm lucky I haven't blown out my shoulder, possibly get a chance to play overseas."
Hanhwa signed a new foreign guy. Cuban national Francisley Bueno made his KBO debut last Thursday and got completely lit up. Welcome to the KBO, Francisley.
Finally in Hanhwa news, Ryu Hyeon-jin broke the world record for quality starts when he recorded his 23rd consecutive quality start. The previous record of 22 was held by Cardinals' pitchers Bob Gibson and Chris Carpenter.

He only allowed one hit batsman and struck out five. The Samsung offense was lead by left fielder Choi Hyeong-woo. Choi went 2-4 with a walk, a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored. Second baseman Shin Myeong-cheol chipped in with a 3-5, one homer, two RBI, one run scored effort.

Samsung pummeled KIA starter Yang Hyeon-jong on Thursday. Yang has been one of the few bright spots for KIA this year, but he's also been insanely erratic. He'll either throw seven innings of one-run ball or he'll throw three innings and give up five runs. The best part is, there's really no pattern. Samsung reliever Jeong Hyeon-wook came into the game during the fifth inning after starter Jang Won-sam was pulled due to a high pitch count. Jeong stuck around for 3 1/3 innings. He only allowed one hit batsman and struck out five. The Samsung offense was lead by left fielder Choi Hyeong-woo. Choi went 2-4 with a walk, a homer, three RBIs and two runs scored. Second baseman Shin Myeong-cheol chipped in with a 3-5, one homer, two RBI, one run scored effort.

If Doosan could've had a few guys on base when they homered, they probably would have won. Doosan had opportunities to put the game away, but no lead is really safe against the Lotte Giants. Doosan held a 5-3 advantage in eighth inning, but Lotte rallied for five runs. Center fielder Jeon Joon-woo blasted a three-run homer during the rally. At some point, KBO teams have to start walking Lee Dae-ho. Lee homered again and finished 1-3 with a walk and two RBIs.

Weekend Roundup: Nexen Heroes vs. Hanhwa Eagles

Ryu Hyeon-jin continued his dominating season on Saturday. Ryu shutout the Nexen Heroes for eight innings(117 pitches, 76 strikes) on Saturday. Ryu gave up only six hits and one walk while striking out eight. I have to wonder if Ryu is going to start getting bored with making KBO hitters look bad. If he were posted to Japan or the US, I'm sure he'd fetch more money Daisuke got out of Boston. Selling Ryu would help the KBO pay for a lot of the infrastructure upgrades that Korea desperately needs. Hanhwa first baseman Jeong Seong-ho drove in four runs while left fielder Choi Jin-haeng clubbed yet another homer. Choi finished 2-4 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Hanhwa got a quality start from a pitcher not named Ryu Hyeon-jin on Sunday. Yoo Won-seong tossed five scoreless innings(93 pitches, 49 strikes). Yoo limited the Heroes to three hits, but gave up five walks while striking out four. Nexen starter Geum Min-cheol made Yoo look like he had amazing control. Geum only lasted an inning, but he gave up four runs on two hits and four walks. The Heroes needed eight pitchers to complete a nine inning game. Hanhwa left fielder Choi Jin-haeng continued to make Eagles fans forget Kim Tae-gyun. Choi went 2-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. He's not as complete a hitter as Kim, but makes contact and the ball jumps off his bat. Hanhwa catcher Lee Hee-geun chipped in with a 1-3, two RBI, one run scored effort.

The Giants ran their unbeaten streak to nine games before Hanhwa stole the final game of this series. KIA and Samsung are in a tie for third place, but the Giants are only 1/2 game behind them and only four games behind Doosan for second place.
The series started with a quality effort from Lotte starter Jang Won-joon and Hanhwa starter Jose Capellan suffering his eleventh loss of the season. Jang threw seven innings(105 pitches, 70 strikes) of two-run baseball. He allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out six. Hanhwa never really mounted much of a rally against Jang. The only time they got to him was when Hanhwa second baseman Jang Won-seok and left fielder Choi Jin-haeng hit solo homers off of him. Lotte third baseman Lee Dae-ho lead the Lotte offense on Friday. Lee hit a three-run homer in the first inning and added an RBI single in the sixth. Lee finished 3-4 with four RBIs and one run scored. Lotte outfielders Karim Garcia and Jeon Joon-woo also added solo homers.
On Saturday, Lotte starter Song Seung-joon and a trio of Lotte relievers combined to throw a five hit shutout of the Eagles. Song threw seven innings(109 pitches, 66 strikes) and gave up only four hits and one hit batsman while striking out seven. Lotte outfielder Jeon Joon-woo hit another solo homer in the second inning to put Lotte on the scoreboard. Lotte backup first baseman Park Jong-yoon got a rare start and did something with it. Park went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Hanhwa finally put the Lotte Giants back in the loss column with Sunday's W. Hanhwa needed a three-run rally in the third inning and 7 1/3 innings of scoreless relief from their bullpen to get the job done. Hanhwa was facing a 4-2 deficit in the third inning when left fielder Choi Jin-haeng clubbed a two-run homer to tie the game at four. Later in the inning, Hanhwa had two outs and a runner on second when third baseman Song Kwang-min singled to right to score the runner from second and break the 4-4 tie. Hanhwa reliever Huh Yoo-kang earned the W by throwing 3 1/3 innings of one-hit, one-walk baseball. Park Jeong-jin earnd the save by throwing four innings of no-hit, two walk baseball with two strikeouts. Karim Garcia was one of the few bright spots for the Lotte Giants.
