That was fast. Only five free agents remain after about 10 days of free agency.
The biggest moves came over the weekend. Nexen spent big and signed LG outfielder/first baseman Lee Taek-geun to a four-year, 5 Billion won contract.
LG also lost reliever Son Shin-yeong to Hanhwa in a 3-year, 1.3 billion won deal.
Lotte reliever Lim Kyeong-wan signed with SK in a three-year deal worth 1.1 billion won.
Lee Dae-ho announced his intention to pursue a career overseas. It's been speculated that the NPB's Orix Buffaloes will be the team to land Lee. Lee rejected a four-year deal worth 10 billion won from the Lotte Giants over the weekend. It's believed Orix has offered a two year, 7 billion won deal.
Samsung's Jeong Dae-hyeon is looking to be the first KBO player to jump to Major League Baseball. Jeong claims nine major league teams have inquired about him.
The only other remaining free agents are Doosan corner infielder Kim Dong-ju(he's been a free agent for each of the past three years and always re-signs with Doosan for a one-year deal), LG catcher Cho In-seong and SK reliever Lee Seung-ho(the one who wears #20).
Finally, the NC Soft Dinos unveiled their new uni's last week and they're suprisingly tasteful. They didn't put a big, goofy cartoon dinosaur on them. I really can't believe it.

7/26 Roundup and News
I bumped into the Samsung Lions newest addition, pitcher Doug Mathis, at the immigration office in Daegu yesterday. My guess is he'll be in action in fairly soon.
Doosan/LG and Hanhwa/Nexen were both washed out last night.

Lotte started the post All-star break looking as lethargic as they did when they started the season.
Lotte starter Goh Won-joon looked flat and uninterested and it showed in his stat line. Goh threw 5 1/3 innings(96 pitches, 61 strikes) and gave up five runs(all earned). Goh allowed nine hits and one walk while striking out four.
Things were bad when Goh was in the game, but things got out of hand when Lotte called upon its bullpen. "Relievers"(I didn't see them providing very much relief) Bae Jang-ho, Jin Myeong-ho and Kim Myeong-seong were all lit up.
Journeyman outfielder Ahn Chi-yong tagged Lotte pitching for two homers. Ahn went 3-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored. Catcher Jeong Sang-ho went 4-5 with two doubles, a homer, three RBIs and three runs scored.
SK starter Lee Yeong-wook was pulled from the game in the fourth inning because, well, he's not a very good pitcher. Lee Seung-ho came in and threw three scoreless innings. Lee gave up only one hit and one walk while striking out one.

KIA broke out a pseudo-throwback uni for their first game after the break. This is definitely one of the more aggressive designs in the KBO.
Samsung trailed for the majority of this game thanks to KIA pushing across a couple of runs in the early innings. Left fielder Kim Sang-hyeon drew a bases loaded walk in the first inning and third baseman Lee Beom-ho hit a RBI single in the second.
Samsung trailed 2-1 heading into the top of the eighth inning when they started a rally. Samsung put runners on the corners with two outs. Left fielder Kang Byeong-gyu put a single back through the middle to tie the game at two. The next batter, Shin Myeong-cheol, hit a ball to deep right that bounced off the wall and took that awkward bounce back towards center field. By the time the dust settled, Shin was standing on third and both runners had scored to give the Lions a 4-2 lead. Catcher Jin Kab-yong capped the rally with a flare into right for a base hit. Shin could have crawled in from third.
Lions closer Oh Seung-hwan struck out two during a perfect ninth for the save.
KIA starter Travis Blackley deserved better than a ND. Blackley threw 7 2/3 innings(114 pitches, 69 strikes) of two-run baseball. Big Trav only allowed five hits and three walks while striking out five.
Samsung starter Jang Won-sam threw his best game of the year. Jang tossed seven innings(122 pitches, 74 strikes) and surrendered two runs. Jang gave up four hits and four walks while striking out five.

Both KIA starter Yoon Seok-min and SK starter Joe Magrane were fairly ineffective. Magrane was removed from the game after a three-run first inning. Yoon fared slightly better as he stuck around for four innings, but was tagged for four runs.
The SK bullpen threw eight innings of one-run baseball. Jeon Byeong-doo threw 3 2/3 innings of relief. Jeon gave up one run on two hits and three walks while striking out four.
The game was tied at four until the top of the seventh. SK third baseman Choi Jeong and center fielder Cho Dong-hwa both hit RBI singles to give SK a 6-4 lead. SK added two more runs in the ninth inning when right fielder Lim Hoon hit a two-run double to push the lead to 8-4.

Nexen starter Moon Seong-hyeon threw five scoreless innings(72 pitches, 40 strikes) against the Eagles. Moon allowed six hit and three walks while striking out two.
Hanhwa actually held a lead in this game. It didn't even last an inning, but, progress! Hanhwa was down 1-0 in the top of the sixth. pinch hitter Goh Dong-jin was hit in the leg with the bases loaded to tie the game at one. Then, Nexen reliever Park Joon-su uncorked a wild pitch to allow the Eagles to take a 2-1 lead.

Unicef is a great cause. You can donate money here, but those unis are hideous. If a team wants to do a special uniform, they have to do the full uni. Not just the jersey. The white and teal unis with the normal pants, hats and socks looks dreadful.
LG DH Park Yong-taek continued his hot April with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Park finished the game 3-4 with a walk, three RBIs and a run scored.
It seems like whenever Lotte starter Song Seung-joon looks like he's turned a corner, he has a game like he threw last night. Song was punished for seven runs on eight hits during his 5 1/3 innigs(82 pitches, 56 strikes). Goh Won-joon was stuck with the loss because he came in for Song with runners on base in the sixth inning. Goh couldn't get the job done, but Song created the mess in the first place.
Lotte battled back from a 5-0 deficit to take a 7-5 lead thanks to a six-run rally in the fifth inning. Left fielder Lee In-guh, DH Hong Seong-heun and second baseman Cho Seong-hwan each drove in a pair of runs for the Giants.
The Lotte offense struggled against the LG bullpen. Three LG relievers combined to throw four scoreless innings. Lee Dong-hyeon threw 2 2/3 scoreless and gave up three hits while striking out two.

Samsung closer Oh Seung-hwan was little shaky in relief. Oh needed 33 pitches to record four outs and gave up two hits and a run in the ninth inning.

Bears to Rock New Unis Sunday
Sunday, April 10, is Bears Day at Jamsil and they'll be rocking new unis for the occasion. It seems like the hat is the same but the jersey's supposed to be "high class" and fit for men, women, and children. I am not sure what's so family unfriendly about the regular jerseys but hey..
Personal thoughts: I've always been a big fan of the script in sports merchandising but this new jersey does not match with the red trimmed Bears cap and that's a fashion no no. They should rock this new jersey with Doosan's 2009 cap:

Doosan Isn't The Only Team With New Uni's...
The 2009 KBO Champs unveiled these new bad boys yesterday. I'll wait until I see them on the field, but I think the new shirts are awesome. They stuck with the classic colors and chose to go with the pullovers instead of the button down jerseys. I'm also a fan of the numbers on the pants. My first reaction to seeing these was, "Wow. They look like a professional baseball team."
I also think the new logo is razor sharp. I think it's a really smart design and I can't wait to see them on the field in March.
KIA is the 3rd team to revamp their uni's this off season. Doosan also underwent a large change and SK added what would be considered a St. Paddy's day special in the US, but they're calling it an attempt to raise awareness for green technology.

SK Goes Green
With Doosan dropping the pink uni's for their Queen's Day promotion, another team had to choose a ridiculous alternate uni. The SK Wyverns are that team. Hold your noses...
Happy St. Patty's Day to you to, SK! The goal is to raise awareness for green technology. The Wyverns will be replacing a lot of their old equipment with green tech. For example, the stadium will switch to LEDs instead of regular bulbs. The team will also make other efforts to save energy.

Doosan Bears Unveil New Uni's, Foreign Pitchers
I'm not a big fan. I actually liked their old uni's, but if it means that we don't have to see these any more, well, then I'm all for the new uni's. I think the text on the home whites is a little goofy. I would have gone with a cursive script, instead of the goofy block letters or the giant crest on the road jersey, but I'll have to see them on the field before I form an opinion. I'm a little surprised that Doosan chose to rework their uniforms. I thought their old look was one of the stronger designs in the KBO. I can't find any information on how this will impact their use of the OB Bears-style uniforms they wore last season.
Doosan has also added Kelvin Jiminez and Les Walrond to their rotation for 2009. Les spent 2009 with the NPB's Yokohama Bay Stars, while Kelvin Jiminez enjoyed a full season at the AAA affiliate of my beloved White Sox. The fact that he couldn't crack the Sox bullpen speaks volumes.

5/7 Roundup and News
It was ladies night last night in Seoul. The Doosan Bears chose to wear these uni's. Somehow, I don't think these are going to sell quite as well as these.
LG 7, Doosan 1
W - Bong Jung-geun (3-3), L - Kim Sun-woo (4-3)
This matchup of Korean guys that once took up space on an MLB roster was clearly won by Bong. The LG ace threw 8 innings(97 pitches, 66 strikes) of 1-run baseball. His only mistake came when he allowed Doosan 3rd baseman Kim Dong-joo to hit a fastball into the seats in the 7th inning. Bong allowed only 2 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 9. Kim Sun-woo had a little more trouble with the LG lineup. Kim lasted 5 2/3 innings(77 pitches, 47 strikes), but he allowed 7 runs on 7 hits and 2 hit batsmen. Somehow, he struck out 3 batters. Most of the damage on Kim came during LG's 4-run rally in the 6th inning. Kim surrendered an RBI single to Roberto Petagine and loaded the bases with 2 outs. He was quickly yanked for reliever Park Jeong-bae. Park allowed a wild pitch to give LG a 5-0 lead. Then, LG catcher Kim Jeong-min shot a ball under the legs of Doosan 1st baseman Lee Won-seok. 2 runs scored to give LG a 7-0 advantage. Doosan's Kim Dong-joo would pad his stats with a solo homer, but Doosan never threatened. Actually Kim was the Doosan offense, in addition to his solo homer, he also added a single. He accounted for both Doosan hits.
KIA 10, Seoul Heroes 3
W - Kwak Jeong-cheol (2-0), L - Lee Dong-hak (1-2)
With the score tied at 1 in the 5th inning, KIA loaded the bases for Kim Sang-hyeon. Kim put a 1-0 pitch from Cho Yong-hoon over the left field fence for a grand slam. The slam gave KIA a 5-1 lead. KIA slugger Choi Hee-seop added a solo homer in 7th to give KIA a 6-2 lead and pad his stats. KIA mounted a 4-run "Eff you!" rally in the 9th inning. I guess they wanted to make sure the Heroes knew they were beaten. Heroes reliever Jang Hyo-hoon stayed in for the 9th inning and essentially threw batting practice. It was an ugly end to an ugly night for Heroes pitching. Doug Clark hit a "Why Not?" solo homer in the bottom of the 9th. If they're going to force him to play while losing 10-2, he might as well try.

Both runners were allowed to score on the play. The next batter, Samsung outfielder Kang Bong-gyu, doubled off the wall in right to score Shin. Hanwha started Yoo Won-sang was chased from the game after only 3 innings pitched. With the early cushion, Samsung starter Ahn Ji-man was allowed to cruise for 5 2/3 innings(95 pitches, 61 strikes). Ahn allowed only 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks with 4 K's. While trying to hold a 6-2 lead in the 9th inning, the Samsung bullpen put runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Oh Seung-hwan was called upon to record the last two outs. Hanwha 3rd baseman Lee Yeo-sang crushed a 2-2 offering over the fence in centerfield for a 3-run homer. Oh would get the next two outs, but does he really deserve a save for giving up a 3-run bomb?

Doosan's Kim Dong-joo would pad his stats with a solo homer, but Doosan never threatened. Actually Kim was the Doosan offense, in addition to his solo homer, he also added a single. He accounted for both Doosan hits.
KIA 10, Seoul Heroes 3
W - Kwak Jeong-cheol (2-0), L - Lee Dong-hak (1-2)
With the score tied at 1 in the 5th inning, KIA loaded the bases for Kim Sang-hyeon. Kim put a 1-0 pitch from Cho Yong-hoon over the left field fence for a grand slam. The slam gave KIA a 5-1 lead. KIA slugger Choi Hee-seop added a solo homer in 7th to give KIA a 6-2 lead and pad his stats. KIA mounted a 4-run "Eff you!" rally in the 9th inning. I guess they wanted to make sure the Heroes knew they were beaten. Heroes reliever Jang Hyo-hoon stayed in for the 9th inning and essentially threw batting practice. It was an ugly end to an ugly night for Heroes pitching. Doug Clark hit a "Why Not?" solo homer in the bottom of the 9th. If they're going to force him to play while losing 10-2, he might as well try.
Samsung 6, Hanwha 5
W - Ahn Ji-man (2-2), L - Yoo Won-sang (0-2), S - Oh Seung-hwan (9)
Samsung took a 4-0 lead after a 3-run rally in the 2nd inning. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, infielder Shin Myeong-cheol hit a deep fly ball to left/center that would bounce over the fence for a ground rule double. Both runners were allowed to score on the play. The next batter, Samsung outfielder Kang Bong-gyu, doubled off the wall in right to score Shin. Hanwha started Yoo Won-sang was chased from the game after only 3 innings pitched. With the early cushion, Samsung starter Ahn Ji-man was allowed to cruise for 5 2/3 innings(95 pitches, 61 strikes). Ahn allowed only 2 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks with 4 K's. While trying to hold a 6-2 lead in the 9th inning, the Samsung bullpen put runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. Oh Seung-hwan was called upon to record the last two outs. Hanwha 3rd baseman Lee Yeo-sang crushed a 2-2 offering over the fence in centerfield for a 3-run homer. Oh would get the next two outs, but does he really deserve a save for giving up a 3-run bomb?
Lotte 4, SK 3
W - Jang Won-joon (2-4), L - Goh Hyo-joon (2-2), S - Jon Adkins (6)
Jang Won-joon gave Lotte a quality start and the Lotte offense gave him just enough offense to win. Jang threw 8 innings(114 pitches, 68 strikes) of 3-run baseball. He allowed 9 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5. All of the damage inflicted by SK came in the early innings. SK 3rd baseman Choi Jeong and catcher Park Kyeong-wan both hit solo homers in the first inning to give SK a 2-0 lead. SK starting pitcher Eom Jeong-wook lasted only 8 pitches. Lotte's Kim Joo-chan hit a leadoff single. Then Lee Seung-hwa hit another single to put runners on the corners with 0 outs. Lee In-gu hit a sac fly to score Kim from 3rd and that was it for Eom. Lotte would score again in the 2nd to tie the game, but Park Kyeong-won hit an RBI single that scored Choi Jeong from 3rd. Park's RBI gave SK a 3-2 lead. Lotte would rally for 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th. 1st baseman Kim Joo-chan would double off the wall in center to score catcher Choi Ki-moon from 3rd and tie the game at 3. Then, Lee Seung-hwa ripped a single to center to score Kim and give Lotte a 4-3 advantage. In the 9th inning, Lotte closer Jon Adkins would surrender a hit, but he struck out 2 while finishing off the Wyverns and recording the save.

The Newest Addition to the KBO Announces the Official Name, Uni's
I can't decide if I like these or not. They're not quite as exciting as I had hoped and are more than a little similar to these guys, but they're not awful. I'm not a big fan of the grey alternate. I just don't care for the grey jersey with the red hat. I really like the numbers on the shoulder. If the numbers were lower, I think the jersey would look crowded with the massive logo across the chest.
I'm not sure what the logo is supposed to be. I see a "W" humping a rock. Seriously, is this one of those 3-D pictures and if I stare at it long enough, I'll see a massive cartoon baseball player smoking a cigarette? I don't get it.
It also sounds like that massive payroll slashing that I had heard about and dismissed, well it's really happening. What's even shadier is that the league passed a rule to allow this to happen.
