4/4 - 4/5 Opening Weekend Roundup

I guess the stadiums were packed this weekend. I wonder how long this is going to continue?

Doosan vs. KIA

4/4 - Doosan 7, KIA 5
4/5 - Doosan 3, KIA 1

The mayor of Seoul, Oh Se-hoon, was on hand to toss out the first pitch this weekend.

Yoon Seok-min got the opening day start for the Tigers and did well...until he started the 5th inning. Yoon recorded the first two outs quickly. Then he allowed a pair of seeing-eye base hits and a walk to load the bases. Then Yoon allowed 3 consecutive doubles to Kim Dong-ju, Kim Hyeon-su and Matt Watson. By the time the dust had settled, Doosan held a comfortable 6-1 lead and Yoon was done for the day. Former MLBer Kim Sun-woo started opening day for the Bears. Kim worked 6 solid innings(91 pitches, 59 strikes) allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and 1 walk with 2 K's. KIA did mount a fake rally in the 8th inning and cut the deficit to 1 run, but Doosan's Lee Jong-wook delivered an RBI triple in the bottom of the 8th and Lee Yong-chan tossed a 1-2-3 9th to close out the game.

On Sunday, Doosan catcher Choi Seung-hwan clubbed a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd to give Doosan a 2-0 lead. Choi's homer would be all the Bears would need to record their 2nd victory in as many games. Jeong Jae-hoon tossed 5 2/3 strong innings(89 pitches, 61 strikes) of 1-run baseball. Jeong allowed 5 hits and 2 walks with 7 strike outs. KIA's only run came on a 4th inning solo homer from center fielder Na Ji-won. Lee Yong-chan recorded his 2nd save of the season with a 1-2-3 9th inning. The KBO also got its first taste of Aquilino "Senor Smoke" Lopez. He's going to be cut by the end of May. I can feel it. Lopez came on to finished the 9th inning. He allowed a run on 2 hits before recording the final out.

SK vs. Hanwha

4/4 - Hanwha 8, SK 2
4/5 - SK 5, Hanwha 2

The biggest development in this game is from the Hanwha uniforms. They've changed the names to English on the back, but they've done it a little strangely. Instead of family names with initials, they're using given names. So, instead of "H J Ryu," it reads "Hyun Jin." Bizarre. Here's some photographic evidence...

After the opening festivities on Saturday, Hanhwa absolutely pummelled SK starter Chae Byeong-yong. Chae was yanked after the 3rd inning. He allowed 5 runs on 6 hits with 2 K's. 2 of the hits didn't stay in the building. Song Kwang-min(lookout for this guy!!!) hit a 2-run bomb in the 2nd inning and Victor Diaz hit a 3-run homer in the 3rd. It was Diaz first KBO homer in his first regular season game. Lee Beom-ho added an "Eff you" homer in the 8th to put the game sufficiently out of reach. Ryu Hyun-jin was fairly mediocre, but he was able to pitch out of the jams he got himself into. Ryu tossed 5 1/3 innings(105 pitches, 61 strikes) before being lifted. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and 4 walks with 6 K's.

On Sunday, the universe corrected itself. SK simply CANNOT lose two in a row at home. The KBO won't allow it. SK played this game their way. Meaning timely hitting along with piecing the game together with as many different pitchers as possible. Actually, they only used 4 pitchers, but no one threw more than 3 2/3 innings. SK erupted for a 3-run rally in the 4th inning. SK loaded the bases with no outs. The next batter, Lee Ho-joon struck out on a check swing. The next batter, Choi Jeong, also struck out, but the third strike got a way from the Hanwha catcher. Jeong Geun-woo sprinted across the plate to score the first run of the inning. With 2 outs and runners on 2nd and third, Park Jae-hong slapped a seeing-eye grounder up the middle to drive in 2 runs and give SK a 3-1 lead. Victor Diaz finished the game 3-4 with a double and his 2nd homer in as many games. He hit a solo shot in the 6th inning. Jeong Dae-hyeon worked two scoreless innings to record his first save of the season.

Samsung vs. LG

4/4 - Samsung 6, LG 2
4/5 - Samsung 5, LG 3

WBC hero, Bong Jung-geun got the Opening Day start for the Twinkies. He wasn't nearly as impressive against Samsung as he was against Japan. Bong was under durress for most of the game, but Samsung never really made him pay for it. Bong worked 5 innings(112 pitches, 78 strikes) allowing 2 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks with 4 K's. Yoon Seong-hwan did something for Samsung that I can't remember seeing all last year. He pitched 7 innings(88 pitches, 57 strikes). He worked quickly, he changed speeds and got the Twins to make outs. Yoon allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 2 K's. Things got exciting in the 9th inning. With a 6-1 lead and 2 outs, Samsung reliever Kwon Hyeok surrendered a solo homer to Roberto Petagine. Samsung called on ace closer, Oh Seung-hwan to shut the door on LG. Oh promptly walked the bases loaded before striking out Lee Byong-gyu. It got...a little tense.

On Sunday, the KBO was introduced to Runelvys Hernandez. He wasn't that awful. He gave up a couple runs, but he wasn't clobbered and he wasn't that wild. He has a chance to stick as your standard "foreign innings eater." With emphasis on the "eater." At one point Runelvys was standing next to Samsung rookie 2B Kim Sang-soo. It looked like a father standing next to his son. I think Kim is the same size as one of Runelvys' legs. He may be challenging KIA's Choi Hee-seop for the largest waistline in the KBO. Runelvys gobbled up 5 innings(87 pitches, 55 strikes) allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 1 walk with 1 K. Losing 3-1 in the 5th inning, Samsung rallied for 4 runs. The rally started with center fielder, Woo Dong-gyun clubbing a 2-run bomb to tie the game at 3. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out, rightfielder Choi Hyeong-woo lifted a fly ball into shallow center that was deep enough to advance the runners and score the go ahead run. Park Seok-min hit a soft grounder to first. Instead of taking the force out at first, Roberto Petagine threw home. Kim Sang-soo was able to slide under the tag and give Samsung a 5-3 and give Park Seok-min a gift RBI. Jeong Hyeon-ok tossed the last 2 innings to record the save. He faced 8 batters in the 2 inning his pitched. 2 recorded base hits. 5 of the remaining 6 batters went down on strikes.

Lotte vs. The Heroes

4/4 - Lotte 3, The Heroes 2
4/5 - The Heroes 10, Lotte 1

On Saturday, with Lotte behind 2-1 in the 7th inning and one out, Kang Min-ho hit a solo homer into the seats in left field to tie the game at 2. Next, Son Ah-seob hit a seeing-eye single up the middle to put the go ahead run on first with 1 out. Lee Seung-hwa came in as a pinch runner for Son. Park Ki-hyuk sacrificed Lee over to second. Lee Dong-hak came in to relieve Heroes ace, Ma Il-yeong. Lotte's Kim Joo-chan hit a fly ball to left that the left fielder appeared to lose in the sun. The poor kid was running all over the place. He looked like Rob Mackowiak playing centerfield for this team. It was painful to watch. In the end, Kim was standing on 2nd with a double and Lee had raced across home plate for the go ahead run. Jon Adkins tossed a 1-2-3 9th to nail down the W.

On Sunday, The Heroes knocked around Lotte pitching all day. Cliff Brumbaugh finished 3-5 with a homer, 2 runs scored and 6(!) RBI. Heroes starter, Kim Soo-kyeong was able to cruise to an easy W. Kim tossed 7 innings(86 pitches, 52 strikes) of 1 run ball. He allowed 5 hits and 1 walk with 2 K's.

AS long as it continues to pack... I won't complain. hehe..

but what a opener! with the Eagles 3 missile like homeruns (the 3 bombers that won't be discussed in UN this week) that spoils SK's victory!

But one I enjoyed the most was the opening game for Doosan-Kia series. Yoon Suk-Min just had a bad break I thought and the game actually got pretty close to Tigers side to the top of 8th... except the Lee Jong Wook's bottom of the 8th triple sealed the deal for the game that day. But I was glad to see the Tigers not giving up (From 6:1 on 4th to 6:5 top 8th) like the previous season. But then again... the second game was disaster and Hee Seop Choi has got to go~!

anyway, It was a good game to stay awake til 2AM in US. AHhhh~~~ the season's back and the world is good once again~~
