6/9 Roundup and News

This is news? I guess the fact that Twins outfielder Lee Dae-hyeong is only 25 is the important part, but he needs 23 more stolen bases to reach 200. He'll probably reach it either late this season or early next season. Aren't there more interesting stories in the KBO right now? Whatever.

The weather on the peninsula was awful last night. I was surprised they played at all. Last night's Seoul Heroes/KIA game was canceled and all of the other games experienced at least a little wet stuff.

Doosan 4, LG 0 (6)
W - Hong Seong-sam(4-0), L - Shim Soo-chang

Doosan held the mighty LG offense to only 2 hits during the wet 6 innings the two teams endured. Doosan starting pitcher Hong Seong-sam(3.46 ERA, 1.28 WHIP) tossed 5 shutout innings(90 pitches, 49 strikes). He allowed both hits and 5 walks while striking out 2. With runners on the corners and no outs in the 3rd inning, Doosan 2nd baseman Lee Won-seok(.283/.330/.446) hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Doosan's first run. Doosan catcher Yong Deok-hoon(.224/.255/.265) made the most of the rain shortened game. Yong went 2-2 with an RBI double in the 4th inning.

Samsung 5, SK 3 (7)
W - Francisco Cruceta (5-2), L - Jeong Byeong-doo (2-3), S - Kwon Hyeok (1)

The reported attendance for this game was 2,030 people. By the 7th inning, the amount of spectators was in the single digits. SK starter Jeong Byeong-doo(3.83 ERA, 1.32 WHIP) was wishing this one was rained out. Jeong was knocked around for 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks during his 4 1/3 innings(77 pitches, 47 strikes) of work. Samsung starter Francisco Cruceta(3.72 ERA, 1.52 WHIP) was effectively wild last night. Cruceta stuck around for 5 2/3 innings(96 pitches, 56 strikes) but he allowed 7 hits and 4 walks while surrendering 3 runs. He did manage to strike out 6. Samsung rallied for 2 runs in both the 4th and 5th innings. 1st baseman Chae Tae-in(.262/.384/.476) delivered a 2 RBI double in the 4th. In the 5th, Kang Bong-gyu(.329/.399/.485) hit an RBI ground out that scored infielder Shin Myeong-cheol(.319/.372/.530) from 3rd. DH Yang Joon-hyeok(.311/.457/.533) drove in Park Han-yi(.288/.386/.392) from 2nd with an RBI single. Park would score again in the 7th on Kang Bong-gyu's RBI single. Kwon Hyeok(1.41 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 14 holds) recorded one out in the bottom of the sixth to earn the ultimate vulture save. Thank the umpires if you get a raise next year, Kwon.

Lotte 9, Hanhwa 3
W - Lee Yong-hoon (3-4), L - Kim Hyeok-min (6-4)

This was the only game last night that was played to completion. Lotte rallied for 8(!) runs in the 2nd inning and coasted to an easy W over the Eagles. Hanhwa starter Kim Hyeok-min (8.32 ERA, 1.85 WHIP) was completely awful. He allowed all 9 runs(all earned) on 6 hits, 3 walks and 2 hit batsman. Somehow, he struck out 4 batters during his 3 2/3 innings of work. Lotte 2nd baseman Cho Seong-hwan(.264/.316/.437) , DH Hong Seong-heun(.338/.378/.480) and infielder Kim Min-seong(.309/.377/.403) drove in 2 runs during the rout. Lotte starter Lee Yong-hoon(5.01 ERA, 1.60 WHIP) pitched well enough not to lose on a night when his teammates scored 9 runs. Lee lasted for 5 2/3 innings(97 pitches, 56 strikes) and only surrendered 2 runs. He allowed 6 hits, 5 walks and 1 hit batsman while striking out 2.

Does the artificial turf common in Asia drain better than real grass, thus causing fewer rainouts?
