6/30 Roundup and News

The Korea Times posted an article about WBC team members suffering injuries. SK catcher Park Kyeong-wan will probably be missed the most. The veteran catcher is done for the year with a torn achilles tendon. Given his age and the severity of the tear, it could be career ending.

While the Joongang Daily discusses how teams game plan for Roberto Petagine.

On to the roundup...

Samsung and KIA were washed out last night in Daegu.

LG 6, Lotte 5
W - Ryu Taek-hyeon (1-0), L - Kang Yeong-sik (1-2), S - Lee Jae-yeong (5)

Lotte actually held a 4-1 lead in the 6th inning thanks to a pair of 2-run rallies. In the 2nd inning, 1st baseman Lee Dae-ho(.282/.363/.492) scored on a triple and an throwing error and catcher Choi Ki-moon(.271/.348/.407) delivered an RBI double. In the 4th inning, Lotte left fielder Park Jeong-joon(.338/.426/.547) clubbed a 2-run homer. LG tied the game in the 6th inning with a 3-run rally. Roberto Petagine(.351/.481/.633) started the scoring with an RBI single that juuuust got past an outstretched Lee Dae-ho. With runners on the corners, LG 1st baseman Park Jong-ho(.302/.421/.381) hit a fly ball to left that should have been an easy out. Park Jeong-joon either lost the ball in the lights or simply chose not to catch it. When the dust settled, it scored both runs and Park Jong-ho was standing up at 3rd base and awarded a triple. Lotte would take the lead back in the 7th with a solo homer from center fielder Lee In-guh(.277/.342/.413). In the bottom of the 7th, the Twins took their first lead. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, LG center fielder Lee Dae-hyeong(.289/.345/.366) hit a sac fly to left to drive in the tying run. After LG's Park Yong-taek(.374/.435/.617) stole third, 3rd baseman Jeong Seong-hoon(.296/.375/.437) hit a sac fly to center to drive him in. LG closer Lee Jae-yeong(3.60 ERA, 1.52 WHIP) tossed a scoreless 9th to earn the save.

Doosan 4, Heroes 3
W - Hong Sang-sam (7-1), L - Jang Won-sam (4-6), S - Lee Yong-chan (17)

It was strange seeing Hong(3.65 ERA, 1.36 WHIP) and Jang(4.59 ERA, 1.39 WHIP) on the same field. Last year, Jang was the new, young starting pitcher that everyone was interested in. Jang has struggled since the WBC and Hong continues to rack up the W's. Both were solid, but not spectacular last night. Hong left the game after finishing the 5th inning with the score tied at 3. With two outs and the bases empty in the 6th, corner infielder Lee Won-seok(.233/.273/.360) hit a solo homer off of Jang to give Doosan a 4-3. The homer would be the last pitch Jang would throw. Doosan reliever Lim Tae-hoon(2.24 ERA, 0.83 WHIP) locked the game down for the next 3 2/3 innings. He allowed only 2 hits while striking out 3. Doosan reliever Lee Yong-chan(1.71 ERA, 1.05 WHIP) retired the final batter of the game and got the vulture save.

SK 4, Hanhwa 2
W - Ken Kadokura (4-3), L - Yoo Won-sang (2-6), S - Jeon Byeon-doo (8)

The SK/Hanhwa tilt was similar to the Doosan/Heroes game. The bullpens had better results than the starters did. Hanhwa starter Yoo Won-sang(6.86 ERA, 2.03 WHIP) was chased from the game in the 4th inning after giving up all 4 runs to SK. His nickname among the Hanhwa pitching corps is "Overachiever." That's a joke that only the 3 Hanhwa fans who read this would get. SK 1st baseman Park Jeong-kwon(.278/.367/.474) hit a solo homer in the 2nd to put SK on the scoreboard. Later in the 2nd, 3rd baseman Choi Jeong(.244/.348/.412) scored on center fielder Kim Kang-min's(.288/.347/.516) RBI groundout. SK would tack on 2 more runs in the 3rd inning thanks to a Kim Jae-hyeon(.250/.394/.434) solo homer and Choi Jeong RBI single. SK starter Ken Kadokura(4.82 ERA, 1.47 WHIP) tossed 5 1/3 innings(85 pitches, 53 strikes) of 2-run ball. He allowed 6 hits, 1 walk and 1 hit batsman while striking out 4. Both bullpens threw a shutout the rest of the way. Hanhwa didn't score after the 5th inning and SK didn't score after the 3rd. The only Hanhwa Eagle to have a decent game was embattled foreign slugger, Victor Diaz(.280/.340/.585). Diaz finished 3-4 with a solo homer. Hanhwa 1st baseman Kim Tae-gyun went 0-4 with 2 K's.
