9/1 Roundup and News

Well, we turned the page on the calendar yesterday and it became this humble blogger's favorite part of the season. This is when teams makeup all the games that were rained out. For one month team's in Korea play a random, chaotic schedule that can actually impact the final standings(like Samsung sneaking into the playoffs last year).

Doosan 4, Hanhwa 3
W - CJ Nitkowski (3-7), L - Kim Hyeok-min (7-13), S - Lim Tae-hoon (3)

Wow. Look at CJ with the quality start! Nitkowski tossed 6 1/3 innings(102 pitches, 63 strikes) of 1-run baseball. CJ gave up 8 hits and 3 walks, but he managed to strike out 4. I may be mistaken, but I believe that this was CJ's 5 consecutive quality start. Good job by him. The Doosan offense rallied for 4 runs in the 3rd inning. It turns out that was all the runs they would need or get. Hanhwa made things interesting in the 9th when Doosan closer Lee Yong-chan was tagged for a 2-run homer by pinch hitter Lee Yeong-woo, but Lim Tae-hoon struck out Lee Beom-ho staring to end the game.

SK 6, Heroes 3
W - Ken Kadokura (7-4), L - Lee Hyeon-seung (12-9)

After getting tagged for a 2-run homer by Heroes center fielder Lee Taek-geun, Kadokura settled down and enjoyed a solid outing. During his 5 innings(84 pitches, 56 strikes) of work, Kadokura gave up only the 2-run homer. In total he allowed 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 4. SK shortstop Na Ju-hwan tied the game with a 2-run blast in the 2nd inning. The Wyverns would rally for 2 runs in the 3rd and 2 more in the 4th. The Heroes tried to make things interesting in the late innings, but SK reliever Jeon Byeong-doo was able to get SK out of a big 8th inning jam.

KIA 4, Lotte 3
W - Seo Jae-wong (5-3), L - Lee Jeong-min (1-2), S - Yoo Dong-hoon (17)

It looked like it would be an early exit for KIA starter Seo Jae-wong when he plunked Karim Garcia with the bases loaded in the 1st inning, but Seo was able to get out of the jam with an inning ending double play. After the 1st inning, Seo bent a little, but he never broke. Seo threw 5 2/3(84 pitches, 52 strikes) innings of 3-run ball. Seo allowed 8 hits, 1 walk and 1 hit batsman while striking out 2. Garcia was able to get a little revenge in the 6th inning. The Mexican slugger tagged Seo for a solo homer. The Tigers rallied for 2 runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. No homers. Nothing really all that dramatic. They just did their jobs and scored a few runs. KIA catcher Kim Sang-hoon finished the day 3-4 with 2 RBIs. He delivered a 2-run double in the 3rd inning that proved to be the difference on the scoreboard. KIA closer Yoo Dong-hoon tossed a scoreless 9th for the save.

I like to think of the song "Danger Zone" playing as we enter the makeup game phase of the KBO schedule.
