SK 4, KIA 3
W - Chae Byeong-yong, L - Yang Hyeon-jong, S - Yoon Kil-hyeon
The series is tied, 2-2
SK's Chae Byeong-yong looked like a competent starting pitcher. A very fat competent starting pitcher, but a competent starting pitcher nonetheless. Chae tossed 5 2/3 innings(88 pitches, 56 strikes) of 1-run baseball. He allowed only 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5. The only run KIA was able to get off of Chae was a solo homer by shortstop Lee Hyeon-gon in the 6th inning.
KIA starter Yang Hyeon-jong did enough to win, but didn't get the support he needed from the KIA offense. Yang threw 5 2/3 innings(88 pitches, 56 strikes, not a typo) and gave up 3 runs. Yang surrendered 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 6. SK broke a scoreless tie in the 2nd inning with a 2-run blast by right fielder Park Jae-hong. SK extended it's lead to 3-0 in the 5th inning on an RBI double from shortstop Na Ju-hwan.
SK added another insurance run in the bottom of the 8th inning. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, right fielder Cho Dong-hwa stepped to the plate. Cho was 0-1 after coming in as a substitute for Park Jae-hong. Cho hit a high bouncer back up the middle. Once the ball went over the pitchers' head, it was in no man's land. Everyone was safe and SK pushed across another run.
It turns out, SK would need all the insurance runs that they had scored. The SK bullpen suffered a 9th inning meltdown. Normally solid reliever Lee Seung-ho started the inning for the Wyverns. KIA pinch hitter Cha Il-mok lead off the inning with a basehit to left. Cha was lifted for pinch runner Kim Jong-kuk. The next batter, 1st baseman Choi Hee-seop, laced a single into right to put runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. 3rd baseman Kim Sang-hyeon struck out swinging and right fielder Lee Jong-beom fouled out to right for two give SK 2 quick outs. Lee Seung-ho was lifted for Yoon Kil-hyeon. Yoon allowed KIA DH Na Ji-wan to hit a seeing-eye single back up the middle. Na's base hit made the score 4-2 with tying run sitting on first base. The next batter, pinch hitter Lee Jae-joo drew a walk to load the bases. KIA catcher Kim Sang-hoon hit a sharp grounder to SK shortstop Na Ju-hwan. Na couldn't field the grounder cleanly and Kim was able to beat the throw to 1st. Na's error cut the SK lead to 4-3. KIA shortstop Lee Hyeon-gon hit another sharp grounder to Na Ju-hwan, but this time he was able to pick it cleanly and lob the ball over to first for the final out.
The series continues on Thursday at 6 PM at Seoul's Jamsil Stadium. The game will be a rematch of the game 1 starters. Aquilino Lopez will get the ball for KIA and Ken Kadokura will take the hill for SK.
