5/2 Roundup and News

If Saturday was blowout day, Sunday was later inning heroics day. Three of the four games ended with runs scored in the final inning.

Lotte 5, KIA 4 (10)
W - Lim Kyeong-won (1-0), L - Son Yeong-min (1-1)
Lotte HR - None KIA HR - Na Ji-won (2)

Lotte starter Ryan Sadowski deserved better than an ND on Sunday. If it weren't for an error by 2nd baseman Jeong Hoon followed by a homer from KIA DH Na Ji-won, he likely would have won. Jeong booted a routine grounder that would have been the third out. Instead Sadowski had to face Na. Sadowski tossed 7 1/3 innings(105 pitches, 73 strikes) of 3-run baseball. Big Ryan gave up 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 8. The Giants held a lead in the late innings, but that vaunted Lotte bullpen gave away another lead. At least this time they only let KIA tie the game. KIA DH Kim Sang-hoon singled to left with runners on the corners and 1 out in the 8th inning. I really couldn't believe that KIA didn't take the lead. The score remained tied at 4 until the bottom of the 10th. In the bottom of the 10th with runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs, backup catcher Jang Seong-woo singled to drive in the winning run. Jang entered the game in the 8th inning when Kang Min-ho was hit on the thigh by a foul ball.

Nexen 11, Doosan 3
W - Kim Seong-hyeon (1-3), L - Park Jeong-bae (1-1)
Nexen HR - Yoo Han-joon (3), Kang Jeong-ho (3) Doosan HR - None

Heroes starter Kim Seong-hyeon had a bend but not break day on the mound and the Nexen offense wore out Doosan pitching. Kim threw 6 2/3 innings(102 pitches, 60 strikes) of 2-run ball. Kim gave up 9 hits and 1 walk while striking out 2. Nexen right fielder Yoo Han-joon had another big day against Doosan. Yoo went 5-6 with a double, a homer 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Shortstop Kang Jeong-ho chipped in a 2-4, 2 walk, 3 RBI, 1 run scored performance. Kang hit an "eff you" homer in the 9th inning just to make sure Doosan knew they were beaten. Doosan shortstop Son Si-hyeon continued his hot streak by going 3-4 with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

SK 6, LG 5
W - Lee Seung-ho (1-0), L - Shinya Okamoto (1-1)
SK HR - Choi Jeong (4), Park Jeong-kwon (6), Jo Dong-hwa (2) LG HR - None

I honestly thought SK would lose this one, but they used some 9th inning heroics to earn their 15th consecutive victory. Backup outfielder Jo Dong-hwa entered the game as a late inning defensive replacement, but made a bigger impact with his bat than his glove. Jo earned himself a water/pocari shower from his teammates when he hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 9th off of LG closer Shinya Okamoto to give SK a 6-5 win. LG catcher Jo In-seong went 2-4 with 3 RBIs in a losing cause for the Twins.

Samsung 8, Hanhwa 6 (10)
W - Brandon Knight (2-2), L - Julio DePaula (0-4), S - Jeong Hyeon-wook (2)
Samsung HR - Jin Kab-yong (3), Choi Hyeong-woo (5), Oh Jeong-bok 2(2) Hanhwa HR - Jeon Geun-pyo (1), Jeon Hyeon-seok (1)

If you can't beat Hanhwa in 9 innings, you should get a loss. I think we need special rules for the Eagles. If they can either score a tying run or prevent a team from scoring a go-ahead run after nine innings, they should get the win. It's not fair to make them play extra baseball. Hanhwa took a 6-5 lead in the 6th inning when Samsung reliever Baek Jeong-hyeon served up a gopher ball to pinch hitter/outfielder Jeon Hyeon-seok with runners on 1st and 2nd. I think the ball landed somewhere near Mokpo. Samsung tied the game at 6 in the 8th inning thanks to a solo homer from backup outfielder/warm body Oh Jeong-bok slugged a solo homer. The game remained tied until the 10th inning. Samsung shortstop Park Jin-man drew a walk from Julio DePaula with 2 outs. Oh came up to the plate again, this time he untied the game with a 2-run homer. Oh finished the game 3-4 with 4 RBIs, 2 runs scored, a HBP and a stolen base. Embattled Samsung pitcher Brandon Knight continued to throw in relief. This time Knight tossed 3 scoreless innings of relief to keep Samsung in the game. Knight gave up 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 4. Samsung reliever Jeong Hyeon-wook struck out 3 during a scoreless 10th inning to earn the save.
