5/8 Roundup and News

KIA 6, LG 4
W - Kim Hee-geol (1-2), L - Kim Ki-pyo (0-2), S - Yoon Seok-min (1)
KIA HR - Kim Sang-hoon (5) LG HR - None

This game was tied at four heading into the 9th inning, but KIA mounted a rally in the top of the inning. KIA loaded the bases with one out. KIA center fielder laced a base hit into left field to break the 4-4 tie. The next batter, Lee Jong-beom hit another base hit into left to give KIA an insurance run and a 6-4 lead. Backup shortstop Lee Hyeon-gon was tagged out at the plate for the 2nd out while trying to score from second. He was out by roughly ten feet. I guess KIA pitcher Yoon Seok-min is back in the closer's role for KIA. I can't think of a pitcher that's had his role changed more in the last few seasons that Yoon has. From starter to closer to set-up guy, Yoon has had to do everything since joining the Tigers. Yoon threw a scoreless 9th for his first save of the season. KIA catcher Kim Sang-hoon continued his hot streak with a grand slam in the 4th inning.

Hanhwa 5, Nexen 0
W - Yang Seung-jin (1-2), L - Kim Sang-hyeon (1-4)
Hanhwa HR - None Nexen HR - None

Hanhwa got a great effort from starter Yang Seung-jin and earned an easy W against Nexen. Yang threw 7 shutout innings(95 pitches, 55 strikes) against the Heroes offense. Yang gave up only 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. Hanhwa scored 3 runs during an assembly line rally in the 1st inning. The Eagles added two more insurance runs in the 2nd inning. 3rd baseman Song Kwang-min went 3-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs.

SK 9, Samsung 3
W - Goh Hyo-joon (2-1), L - Yoon Seong-hwan (2-2)
SK HR - Na Ju-hwan (2), Park Jae-hong (4), Choi Jeong (6) Samsung HR - Jin Kab-yong (4)

Not much went right for Samsung in this game. Yoon Seong-hwan was chased from the game in the 4th inning and the Samsung offense struggled to get anything done. SK starter Goh Hyo-joon threw 5 2/3 innings(91 pitches, 58 strikes) of 1-run ball. He gave up 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6. SK shortstop Na Ju-hwan hit a 3-run homer during a 4-run rally in the 2nd inning. Goh was able to cruise, the SK offense added a few insurance runs and SK coasted to an easy W. Good-bye, losing streak. SK third baseman Choi Jeong went 2-4 with a homer, 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. Samsung catcher Jin Kab-yong was one of the few Lions able to accomplish anything at the plate. Jin went 2-3 with a solo homer.

Lotte 11, Doosan 1
W - Ryan Sadowski (1-4), L - Hong Sang-sam (0-1)
Lotte HR - Lee Dae-ho 2(9), Hong Seong-heun (7) Doosan HR - None

The mighty Lotte lineup absolutely obliterated Doosan starter Hong Sang-sam, while Ryan Sadowski continued to pitch like a man who wanted to keep his job. Third baseman Lee Dae-ho went 3-4 with 2 homers, 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. DH Hong Seong-heun went 2-4 with a walk, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. All three homers were hit off of Hong. Sadowski threw 7 innings(93 pitches, 66 strikes) of 1-run baseball. Ryan allowed 4 hits while striking out 3. I think we can say that Sadowski has turned the page on his early struggles. Limiting a lineup like Doosan's to four hits and zero walks is no small feat.
