5/20 Roundup and News

Both Nexen/SK and Lotte/LG were canceled last night due to rain on the peninsula.

Hanhwa 5, KIA 0
W - Ryu Hyeon-jin (4-5), L - Seo Jae-wong (0-5)
Hanhwa HR - Kang Dong-woo (6) KIA HR - None

Hanhwa ace Ryu Hyeon-jin was in excellent form last night. Ryu threw eight shutout innings(128 pitches, 81 strikes). Ryu gave up one hit and one walk while striking out eight. Ryu recorded nine ground ball outs while carving up the KIA lineup. He lowered his ERA to 3.50 and his WHIP to 1.07.

KIA starter Seo Jae-wong still can't catch a break in the KBO. Seo threw six innings(96 pitches, 58 strikes) of two-run baseball. Seo allowed six hits, one walk and a hit batsman while striking out four. This was by far the best outing of Seo's 2011 season and he was stuck with another L.

Hanhwa scored their first run on a wild pitch in the fourth inning and cobbled together a bunch of one and two run innings to give Ryu a bit of insurance.

Samsung 5, Doosan 4
W - Oh Seung-hwan (1-0), L - Goh Chang-seong
Samsung HR - None Doosan HR - Son Si-hyeon (2)

Samsung held a 4-3 lead in the eighth inning and called on closer Oh Seung-hwan to keep the Bears off the scoreboard. He promptly gave up a solo homer to Doosan shortstop Son Si-hyeon to tie the game at four. Oh got out of the inning with the score still tied and finished the ninth without giving up any more runs.

Samsung center fielder Lee Yeong-wook lead off the bottom of the ninth with a base hit. He was sacrificed to second by third baseman Park Seok-min. The next batter, slugger Choi Hyeong-woo, was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second for second baseman Shin Myeong-cheol. Shin put a base hit into right center and Lee was able to race in from second for the winning run. Shin was chased around by his teammates and repeatedly slapped in the head to celebrate his good fortune.

Lee finished the game 3-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Doosan starter Dustin Nippert was betrayed by his defense. Nippert threw five innings(115 pitches, 80 strikes) and was charged with four runs(only one earned). A pair of errors in the fourth inning allowed Samsung to rally for three runs. Nippert gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out three.

Samsung starter Cha Woo-chan threw well enough, but was stuck with the ND. Cha threw 6 2/3 innings(115 pitches, 72 strikes) of three-run baseball. Cha allowed eight hits and three walks while striking out three.

When Lee Dae-hyung drove in the walk off run for LG over Lotte today, the other players bent him over and gave him a spanking. I LOLed! haha

It's an interesting part of Korean baseball culture and deserves a post of its own.
