6/19 Roundup and News

Samsung 4, KIA 3
W - Jeong Hyeon-wook (2-3), L - Son Yeong-min (4-3), S - Oh Seung-hwan (20)
Samsung HR - None
KIA HR - Kim Sang-hoon (3), Kim Seon-bin (3)

KIA held a 3-1 lead in the top of the eighth. The Lions managed to scratch across a run thanks to an error by KIA first baseman Choi Hee-seop.

The Lions managed to keep KIA off the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth. Samsung put runners on second and third with one out in the top of the ninth. Backup catcher Hyeon Jae-yoon singled to score both runners and give Samsung a 4-3 lead.

Samsung closer Oh Seung-hwan allowed two baserunners in the ninth, but managed to record the final outs before any damage was done.

Lost in this game was a solid effort from KIA starter Seo Jae-wong. Seo threw 6 1/3 innings(97 pitches, 64 strikes) of one-run ball(none earned). Seo allowed seven hits and three walks while striking out four.

Samsung starter Jeong In-wook threw fairly well, but gave up a pair of solo homers. Jeong tossed five innings(76 pitches, 44 strikes) and only gave up two hits and two walks while striking out five.

Hanhwa 2, Doosan 1
W - Ryu Hyeon-jin (7-6), L - Lee Hye-chan (1-4)
Hanhwa HR - None
Doosan HR - None

Hanhwa ace Ryu Hyeon-jin stepped up on Sunday. Ryu threw a complete game(122 pitches, 82 strikes) and allowed only one-run. Ryu gave up six hits and two walks while striking out eight. Ryu gave up a RBI double to Doosan left fielder Lee Hyeon-su and that was all he gave up.

Hanhwa had the bases loaded with two outs in the fourth and Doosan starter Fernando Nieve walked in the tying run.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninth. Hanhwa first baseman Jeong Won-seok lead off the inning with a walk and was immediately pulled for a pinch runner. Doosan reliever Goh Chang-seong threw a pick off throw past Doosan first baseman Choi Joon-seok to allow the runner to advance to second. Then, Goh uncorked a wild(a few feet wide of home plate) pitch to allow the runner to advance to third. Doosan shortstop Lee Dae-su put a fly ball into center field to drive the runner in and walk off the Bears.

Lotte 10, Nexen 4
W - Goh Won-joon (3-4), L - Brandon Knight (2-8), S - Kim Sa-yul (3)
Lotte HR - None
Nexen HR - None

Lotte rallied from a 4-0 deficit to take a 7-4 lead in the fifth inning thanks to a seven-run rally. The Giants loaded the bases and the Heroes kept making mistakes and allowing Lotte to score. If it wasn't a wild pitch, it was a walk, if it wasn't a walk, a base hit would fall in. It was an amazing display.

Lotte catcher Kang Min-ho went 3-5 with three RBIs and a run scored.

Lotte starter Goh Won-joon was lucky he didn't get lit up. Goh was more than a little wild. Goh threw five innings(115 pitches, 67 strikes) and gave up four runs(three earned). Goh allowed six hits, five walks and two hit batsmen while striking out two.

Heroes left fielder Corey Aldridge went 3-4 with a walk, a double and two RBIs in a losing cause.

SK 6, LG 2
W - Song Eun-beom (4-1), L - Park Hyeon-joon (8-5)
SK HR - None
LG HR - Lee Byeong-gyu (13)

SK starter Song Eun-beom actually stuck around long enough to earn a W. Song, known for checking out early, threw five innings(83 pitches, 51 strikes) of scoreless baseball. Song gave up four hits, two walks and a hit batsman while striking out three. He recorded seven outs via the ground ball.

SK broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a five-run rally. All five runs went unearned as the LG defense committed a pair of errors during the inning. LG shortstop Yoon Jin-ho made a key error that allowed two runs to score and SK left fielder Park Jae-sang hit a two-run double to plate two more runs. First baseman Lee Ho-joon piled on with a RBI single to cap the rally.

LG right fielder Lee Byeong-gyu appeared to be one of the few Twins batters that knew a game was going on. Lee went 3-5 with a solo homer.

I hear ya on being busy... but just can't believe your omission. History was made on Sunday; no photo, no recognition, not even a mention??

Ryu Hyun-jin became the fastest to 1000 Ks in KBO history, both the youngest to do so (24) and in the fewest number of games (153).

The game was sold-out over an hour and a half before game time (almost unheard of in Daejeon). Standing room only, the place was rocking, you could feel the energy. He came in needing 5 Ks, and after every one the place went nuts. When he finally got to 999 in the 6th or 7th, every 2 strike count had the crowd cheering. It was awesome. Reminded me of a few years ago when Song Jin-woo went for 2000Ks and 200 Wins.

Anyway it was a big day, and another notch on Ryu's amazing resume.
