Hanhwa 4, Samsung 3
W - Shin Ju-yeong (1-0), L - Kwon Oh-joon (1-1)
Hanhwa HR - None Samsung HR - Cho Yeong-hoon (1)
Samsung jumped out to a three-run lead thanks to a few one-run rallies in the early innings. Samsung's lead was erased thanks to a three-run Eagles rally in the seventh inning. Hanhwa third baseman Lee Yeo-sang hit a two-run single to put the Eagles on the scoreboard. Hanhwa tied the game with a RBI single from Choi Jin-haeng.
Hanhwa broke the 3-3 tie in the eighth. Pinch hitter Kim Kyeong-eon lead off the inning with a single and advanced on a bunt from shortstop Lee Dae-su. Kim would score on a single from catcher Shin Kyeong-hyeon.
Hanhwa reliever Shin Ju-yeong recorded two outs in the eight and threw a perfect ninth to earn the W.
Lost in this one was a solid effort from Samsung starter Cha Woo-chan. Cha threw 6 2/3 innings(108 pitches, 67 strikes) of three-run ball. He threw the ball really well before he ran out of gas in the seventh. Cha gave up eight hits and two walks while striking out three. Cha recorded 14 fly ball outs.
Samsung first baseman Cho Yeong-hoon had a solid day in a losing effort. Cho went 2-3 with a homer, two RBIs and a run scored.
SK 6, Doosan 5
W - Jeong Dae-hyeon (2-1), L - Jeong Jae-hoon (2-3)
SK HR - Jeong Geun-woo (5), Kim Yeon-hoon (1) Doosan HR - Choi Seung-hwan (1), Kim Dong-ju (5)
This game was tied at four in the top of the ninth. Doosan broke the tie with a solo homer from slugger Kim Dong-ju, but the Wyverns answered back in the bottom of the ninth.
With one out, third baseman Choi Jeong doubled. That brought little used, back up infielder Kim Yeon-hoon to the plate. Kim owned exactly two career homers and a sub-.600 OPS in over 400 plate appearances. Kim blasted a 0-1 pitch over the fence for a two-run, walk-off homer.
SK second baseman Jeong Geun-woo lead the Wyverns' offense by going 2-4 with a walk, three RBIs and a run scored.
Nexen 11, Lotte 10
W - Kim Yeong-min (1-1), L - Kang Yeong-sik, S - Son Seung-rak (2)
Nexen HR - Kang Byeong-sik (2), Song Ji-man (3) Lotte HR - Lee Dae-ho (14)
Nexen jumped out to an early 5-0 lead thanks to some poor pitching from Lotte starter Lee Jae-gon and some shoddy defense behind him. Most of the damage was inflicted on a three-run bomb from Nexen DH Kang Byeong-sik.
Lotte battled back against a Nexen bullpen that appeared to like Italian food because they kept serving up meatballs. At one point, Yoon Ji-wong was actually called for back-to-back balks that lead to a run scoring. Sometimes, I think these guys WANT to fail.
Lotte eventually took a 9-8 lead in the seventh inning a RBI single from pinch hitter Hwang Seong-yong and a RBI ground out from center fielder Jeon Joon-woo.
Nexen took the lead back in the top of the ninth with a two-run homer from right fielder Song Ji-man. Nexen added a little insurance with a RBI double from backup catcher Heo Do-hwan.
It turns out the Heroes would need the extra run because Lotte mounted a fake rally in the bottom of the ninth. Jeon Joon-woo actually reached base this time and hit a RBI single to cut the Nexen lead to 11-10. Left fielder Lee In-guh grounded out to end the game. Lee finished 0-6 in a game that featured 21 runs and 30 hits.
KIA 8, LG 0
W - Aquilino Lopez (5-2), L - Kim Kwang-sam (3-2)
KIA HR - Kim Seon-bin (2), Kim Sang-hyeon (5) LG HR - NONE
KIA broke a scoreless tie in the third inning with a three-run homer from shortstop Kim Seon-bin. The KIA offense piled on a few more one and two-run rallies and KIA was up 8-0 by the time the dust settled.
KIA left fielder Kim Sang-hyeon went 2-5 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored.
KIA starter Aquilino Lopez was solid again. Lopez tossed seven(97 pitches, 72 strikes) scoreless innings. Lopez gave up only seven hits, one walk and one hit batsman while striking out four. 11 of the outs he recorded came via the ground ball.
