9/28 Roundup and News

Hanhwa 4, LG 2
W - Ryu Hyeon-jin (11-7), L - Ben Jukich (10-7), S - Park Jeong-jin (7)
Hanhwa HR - None
LG HR - None

Hanhwa ace Ryu Hyeon-jin looked solid last night. Ryu tossed six innings(93 pitches, 64 strikes) of two-run ball. Ryu gave up seven hits and struck out three. He didn't appear to have overpowering stuff, but he was able to stay ahead in the count and rack up outs.

Both of these teams looked about ready for the season to end. The less said about this game the better, but this might be the last time the KBO sees Ben Jukich.

Jukich is your standard American innings eater. He doesn't overpower hitters, but he's able to get outs and take the ball every fifth day. It wouldn't be a huge shock to see him get an offer or two from the NPB next year.

He came out for the seventh inning when it was probably time to pack it in and wound up with the loss.

Jukich threw 6 1/3 innings(92 pitches, 60 strikes) and was tagged for all four Eagles' runs. Jukich gave up eight hits and two walks while striking out two.

Samsung 5, Doosan 2
W - Doug Mathis (5-1), L - Lee Yong-chan (5-10), S - Oh Seung-hwan (46)
Samsung HR - None
Doosan HR - None

Samsung was able to scratch out enough runs to get a lead and used that bullpen to hang on for the W.

Samsung starter Doug Mathis tossed six innings(115 pitches, 63 strikes) of two-run baseball. Mathis gave up six hits and four walks while striking out five. It was a little surprising to see Mathis throw as much as he did last night. This was likely his last regular season start, but 115 pitches at this point of the season seems excessive.

Samsung relievers Jeong Hyeong-wook and Kwon Oh-joon both recorded holds. Closer Oh Seung-hwan struck out two during a scoreless ninth to earn his league leading 46th save.

Lions' slugger Choi Hyeong-woo did most of the damage against Doosan. Choi drove in four runs and went 3-5 with a double and triple. Right fielder Park Han-yi went 3-4 with a walk, two runs scored and a stolen base.

Nexen 5, SK 0
W - Kim Su-kyeong (1-1), L - Brian Gordon (5-4), S - Son Seung-rak (17)
Nexen HR - None
SK HR - None

Nexen starter Kim Su-kyeong looked great as he shut the Wyverns down for 6 1/3 innings(95 pitches, 60 strikes). Kim gave up only thee hits and one hit batsman while striking out five.

Kim made the SK offense looked fairly mediocre in a game they couldn't afford to look mediocre in. SK is still a full game behind the Lotte Giants for second place. Giants fans can't breathe easy yet, but they could at least exhale a few times last night.

Nexen center fielder Yoo Han-joon lead the Heroes' offense by going 3-5 with a double and two RBIs.

Jukich has been solid for LG this year. Hard to imagine LG scouts picking up another good pitcher next season... =)
