6/11 Roundup and News

Reader "Idaho" wants more details on "The" Rick Bauer's stats. Rick is sporting a nifty 15.83 ERA and 2.69 WHIP in 9 2/3 innings pitched. He has 9 K's and 8(!) walks. He's probably not long for Korea...assuming he hasn't been released already.

On to the roundup...

Doosan 4, LG 3
W - Lim Tae-hoon (8-1), L - Lee Jae-yeong (2-1), S - Lee Yong-chan (15)

With the game tied at 3 in the bottom of the 8th with shortstop Son Si-yeon(.239/.316/.356) on 2nd base and 2 outs, Doosan warm body/right fielder Min Byeong-heon(.238/.313/.297) ripped a double down the line. Son scored easily and gave Doosan a 4-3 lead. Son had a solid game. He finished 2-4 with 3 RBIs and 1 run scored. All 3 RBIs came on a triple with the bases loaded in the 4th inning. Doosan starting pitcher Kim Sang-hyeon(3.76 ERA, 1.27 WHIP) threw well enough to win, but didn't get enough run support. Kim tossed 6 innings(76 pitches, 44 strikes) of 3-run baseball. He allowed 7 hits and 1 walk while striking out 0.

Doosan slugger Kim Dong-ju(.365/.470/.593) was hit by a pitch in the 4th inning and left the game shortly thereafter. It looked like he got drilled right on the ol' funny bone. As far as I can tell, he's day-to-day.

KIA 9, Seoul Heroes 6
W - Seo Jae-wong (2-1), L - Lee Dong-hyeok (1-3), S - Yoo Dong-hoon (5)

All 15 runs were scored in the 3rd and 4th innings. In the 1st and 2nd innings and the 5th through the 9th, zeroes were put up on the scoreboard. Not really all that significant, but it made the line score look funny. With the game tied at 5 and runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 outs, KIA 1st baseman Choi Hee-seop(.259/.404/.519) hit a flyball to left to drive in the go ahead run. The next batter, 3rd baseman Kim Sang-hyeon(.269/.333/.491), walked. Catcher Kim Sang-hoon(.224/.333/.385) stepped to the plate with runners on 1st and 2nd. He put a Jeon Joon-ho(7.36 ERA, 1.69 WHIP) offering over the center field wall for a 3-run homer. The Heroes would mount a fake rally in the bottom of the 4th, but that was it for scoring in this game. This was supposed to be Seo Jae-wong's(4.67 ERA, 1.41 WHIP) triumphant return to the rotation. Seo had been out since April with an arm injury of some sort. Seo got the W, but it was an ugly one. Seo lasted 5 innings(82 pitches, 54 strikes) and surrendered 6 runs(5 earned). He gave up 7 hits and 0 walks while striking out 5. 3 of the hits he allowed didn't stay in the ballpark.

Samsung 5, SK 3
W - Jeong Hyeon-wook (4-2), L - Lee Seung-ho (4-2), S - Oh Seung-hawn (15)

I really can't believe Samsung not only got a lead in the late innings, but they actually held on to it. Samsung starter Lee Woo-seon(season debut) was predictably mediocre, but SK starter Song Eun-beom(2.58 ERA, 1.20 WHIP) was surprisingly mediocre. Song allowed 3 runs during his 5 1/3 innings(113 pitches, 63 strikes). Song was knocked around for 7 hits and surrendered 5 walks. He also hit a batter, but he managed to notch 5 K's. With the score tied at 3 in the top of the 9th, Samsung rallied for two runs. Center fielder Park Han-yi(.286/.387/.391) drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI double. Park would score on a single by 1st baseman Chae Tae-in(.269/.388/.500). Oh Seung-hwan(4.07 ERA, 1.36 WHIP) tossed a scoreless 9th inning to record the save. Samsung DH Yang Joon-hyeok(.318/.462/.550) put together a solid day at the plate. Yang finished 2-4 with a homer, 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. He hit a solo shot in the 5th inning.

Lotte 12, Hanhwa 6
W - Cho Jeong-hoon (5-5), L - Jeong Min-cheol (0-5)

Lotte is officially out of the cellar thanks to a 5-game winning streak. The rumors of Jerry Royster's demise were premature. The Giants could still make a run at the #3 or #4 slot in the playoffs.

Hanhwa starter Jeong Min-cheol(9.67 ERA, 2.41 WHIP) was absolutely lit up and didn't make it out of the 2nd inning. Jeong has to be the early favorite for this year's Least Valuable Pitcher award or, as I like to call it, Cy Yuck. The Hanhwa bullpen was equally bad against a resurgent Lotte offense. Lotte catcher Kang Min-ho(.238/.299/.383) lead the way with a 4-4 evening. Kang doubled in the 5th inning and scored 3 runs in the game. One of Kang's hits was infield single. The shortstop essentially threw the ball directly into the ground and watched it roll to first. It was perhaps the worst throw I've ever seen. Karim Garcia(.217/.301/.438) actually showed signs of life, but that's not saying much against Hanhwa's pitching staff. Garcia went 2-3 with a walk, a homer, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored. His 6th inning homer was a 2-run bomb. He posed a little too much afterwards. Come on, Karim, you've been in a season long slump. Corner infielder Lee Dae-ho(.298/.387/.543) also drove in 3 runs while going 1-3 with a sacrifice and a walk. Lee Beom-ho(.277/.363/.560) was one of the few bright spots for Hanhwa. The WBC hero/Eagles 3rd baseman went 2-4 with 1 homer, 2 RBIs and 1 run scored.
