6/19 - LG 5, Samsung 4
6/21, Game 1 - LG 6, Samsung 5
6/21, Game 2 - LG 8, Samsung 1
I was fairly numb after Friday's loss. It was a soul crushing affair. Samsung held a 4-1 lead in the 8th inning and allowed the mighty Twins offense to rally for 4 runs. Samsung starter Cha Woo-chan pitched well enough to win, but the Samsung bullpen was awful. The rally started with an RBI double from LG DH Roberto Petagine and ended with a 3-run pinch-hit homer from Lee Jin-yeong. Thanks guys, thanks a lot. Cha gets a nice start to add to season statline, but he also got a big, fat ND. Cha tossed 6 2/3 innings(111 pitches, 63 strikes) of 1-run baseball. He allowed 4 hits and 4 walks while striking out 6.
After Saturday's rainout, I got to sit through another late inning comeback by LG on Sunday afternoon. This time Samsung held a 5-4 lead in the 7th, but allowed the Twins to plate a pair and take the lead. With the bases loaded and 1 out, pinch hitter Ahn Chi-yong poked a single up the middle to tie the game at 5. The next batter, 2nd baseman Park Kyeong-su grounded out to 2nd for the 2nd out of the inning, but the go ahead run was able to score. LG closer Lee Jae-yeong tossed a 1-2-3 9th for the save. The first two batters in the LG lineup were the difference in the game. Left fielder Park Yeong-taek and center fielder Lee Dae-hyeong combined to go 5-7 with 2 walks, 4 runs scored and Lee stole another base. The table was always set for LG's big bats.
The game 2 loss was much more palatable. I'd rather watch a team get slaughtered than lose a lead in the late innings. The goal of the Samsung offense was to get on the KTX back to Daegu as soon as possible. The Lions had 7 baserunners. Total. 7. LG ace Bong Jung-geun looked solid, but it's easy to look good when the goal of your opponent is to leave as quickly as possible. Dr. Bong tossed 7 innings(98 pitches, 58 strikes) of 1-run baseball. He allowed 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5. The game was close until the 7th inning. Samsung starter Yoon Seong-hwan ran out of gas and was lifted for Samsung closer Oh Seung-hwan. Oh must've been confused. I can't remember the last time he pitched before the 8th inning. With the bases loaded and 1 out, LG pinch hitter Lee Jin-yeong hit a hard ground ball to first. Chae Tae-in couldn't find the handle and it bounced away from him. 2 run scored on the play and the score became ridiculous. Oh loaded the bases again with a walk and promptly taken out of the park by Park Yong-taek for a grand slam. I have to admit, when the ball went out, I laughed.
