The Lions broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when shortstop Kim Sang-su started a rally with a single and a stolen base. Kim would score when third baseman Cho Dong-chan doubled off the wall. Cho scored on a double by left fielder Choi Hyeong-woo. First baseman Chae Tae-in attempted to score on first but, he was thrown out by ten feet and made things worse by sliding directly into catcher Yong Deok-han's shin guard. Chae had to leave the game with a head injury.
Doosan tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run blast from DH Kim Dong-ju. The homer was an absolute screamer. It appeared to take all of .002 seconds to go from the bat to the stands.
Doosan rallied again in the top of the fifth inning. The Bears loaded the bases with no outs and Samsung manager Sun Dong-yeol was forced to pull starter Cha Woo-chan from the game. Doosan took a 3-2 lead on a sac fly from center fielder Lee Jong-wook. Reliever Jeong In-wook got a ground ball from first baseman Choi Joon-seok, but it went right up the middle for a base hit and scored both runners to give Doosan a 5-2 advantage.
5-2 was where the game remained until the bottom of the eighth. Samsung put runners on the corners with two outs. Shortstop Kim Sang-su was right in the middle of this rally again. This time, he poked a single into left to cut the Doosan lead to 5-3. Samsung right fielder Park Han-yi stepped to the plate. Park put a 2-0 pitch over the fence in right/center for a three-run homer. Park's blast gave the Lions a 6-5 lead and almost started a riot in the stands.
Things got a little shaky in the top of the ninth for the Lions. Doosan put runners on first and second with one out. Samsung reliever Kwon Hyeok was called for a balk and the runners advanced to second and third. Kwon stepped on the rubber, looked in at the signs and simply dropped the ball. After picking it up, he went to the rosin while on the mound and the balk was called. Kwon was pulled from the game and Samsung turned to Ahn Ji-man to nail down the W. Ahn got Lee Jong-wook to hit an infield fly for the second out and he got catcher Yang Eui-ji to fly out to center to end the game. I'm not going to lie. I was about two seconds away from throwing up during this entire series.
Samsung starter Cha Woo-chan was nervous for his first playoff start. Cha threw four plus innings(78 pitches, 46 strikes) and was in trouble during most of them. He was bailed out by an amazing throw from right fielder Park Han-yi in the first inning and pitched in and out of trouble until the Doosan Bears made him pay for it. Cha allowed five hits and five walks while striking out four.
One thing to watch out for during this series is the Doosan running game. Samsung has struggled all year with stolen bases. Judging by the first game, Doosan plans on taking advantage of a creaky Jin Kab-yong and an inexperienced Hyeon Jae-yoon. The Bears were successful in three out of four stolen base attempts.
The series continues tomorrow at 6 PM Daegu time. The Lions will send Bae Yeong-su against Doosan's Kelvin Jiminez. Bae is...not a favorite here at TSOKB. He's your typical burned out Asian starter. He was awesome when he was younger, but between outdated training methods, overuse and injury, he's a shell of his former self. Dude also looks like he's about forty-five. He is, in fact, a year younger than I am. Bae rebounded from a disastrous 2009 season to post a mediocre 2010 season. Bae went 6-8 and one save with a 4.74 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 119 2/3 innings while switching between the bullpen and the rotation. Bae struck out 64 and walked 45. Kelvin Jiminez is slightly better than your typical foreign innings eater. Jiminez went 14-5 with a 3.32 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 152 innings. Jiminez struck out 87 and walked 71. I'm really surprised he didn't start game one. He was last seen pitching 1 2/3 innings of relief against the Giants in game four of the first round. I'm not going to lie. I'm really not thrilled about this pitching match up. I really can't believe the Lions aren't using Jang Won-sam or Tim Redding or Francisco Cruceta or anyone other than Bae Yeong-su. I'm actually hoping it's a misprint.

Samsung can thank Jung "I love giving up clutch homeruns in the playoffs" Jae-hoon. He's the BK Kim of this year's KBO playoffs.
Hong actually did better than I expected. Too bad this series isn't a best of 7 like they used to be back in the day.

BTW Matt, did you get tickets to the games? Or are you buying them from the scalpers?
Scalpers only charge a 5,000 won premium...well worth it IMO. Daegu got lucky, starter was shaky and couldn't come through with clutch hitting early..err, until Park Han Yi blasted it. MVP by far, we were bowing to him when he came back out to RF. Awesome ending to a frustrating early game, Go SamSung!!
