7/8 Roundup and News

Nexen/Hanhwa was rained out and a Daegu-based blogger was thrilled that he didn't have to write about two absolutely brutal teams.

KIA 1, LG 0 (7)
W - Yoon Seok-min (10-2), L - Shim Su-chang (0-4)
KIA HR - None
LG HR - None

KIA starter Yoon Seok-min was brilliant for six innings(96 pitches, 61 strikes) of wet baseball. Yoon completely shut down the Twins and only gave up two hits and three walks while striking out seven.

KIA managed to push across a run in the sixth inning when DH Lee Jong-beom poked a single through the left side with runners on first and second with one out. The runner on second never broke stride and scored standing up.

LG starter Shim Su-chang tossed 6 2/3 innings(103 pitches, 65 strikes) of one-run ball before the game was stopped in the seven inning. Shim gave up five hits and two walks while striking out five.

SK 10, Lotte 2
W - Lee Yeong-wook (1-1), L - Brian Corey (4-3), S - Jeong Dae-hyeon (6)
SK HR - Kim Kang-min (3)
Lotte HR - Kang Min-ho (11)

I honestly thought that SK was giving up on this game when I saw that Lee Yeong-wook was getting the start against Lotte. Lee was a competent spot starter when he was younger, but he hadn't seen action with the Wyverns since 2008. Lee managed to keep the Giants off-balance for six innings(86 pitches, 57 strikes) while the SK offense pounded whichever sad sack Lotte ran out there. Lee gave up only three hits and one hit batsman while striking out five. Good for him.

It's a bad thing when a team gives up ten runs, but only four of them are earned, right?

The game was tied at one when Lotte completely fell to pieces in the sixth inning. Lotte gave up seven runs in the inning and turned a 1-1 nailbiter into an 8-1 laffer. SK was spraying line drives all over the field and things went from bad to worse when Lotte second baseman Cho Seong-hwan couldn't handle a ground ball that could have gotten Lotte out of the inning with a lot less damage inflicted.

Lotte managed to pick up a run in the eighth to cut the lead to 8-2(yay?), but SK center fielder Kim Kang-min blasted a two-run homer off of reliever Kim Su-wan to push the Wyverns lead to 10-2.

SK reliever Jeong Dae-hyeon was excellent in his three innings of relief work. Jeong faced nine batters and sent them all back to the bench. He struck out three.

SK second baseman Jeong Geun-woo went 2-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Catcher Jeong Sang-ho went 3-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

Lotte starter Brian Corey was charged with five runs, but only two were earned during his 5 1/3 innings of work(105 pitches, 64 strikes). Corey gave up seven hits, one walk and a hit batsman while striking out one.

Doosan 2, Samsung 1
W - Dustin Nippert (8-4), L - Ken Kadokura (5-6), S - Lee Hye-chan (2)
Doosan HR - Oh Jae-won (4)
Samsung HR - Park Han-yi (3)

Samsung jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a solo homer by right fielder Park Han-yi in the fourth inning, but Doosan rallied for a couple runs in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead. Doosan first baseman Oh Jae-won blasted a solo homer and pinch hitter Kim Dong-ju hit a RBI ground out to put Doosan ahead.

Doosan starter Dustin Nippert threw a brilliant game. Nippert tossed 8 2/3 innings(131 pitches, 86 strikes) and only allowed the one run. Nippert gave up just two hits and two walks while striking out ten. Doosan reliever Lee Hye-chan came in to record the final out and needed only two pitches to record the vulture save.

Samsung starter Ken Kadokura can't catch a break. He's racking up losses even when he throws the ball reasonably well. Kadokura threw six innings(11o pitches, 70 strikes) and gave up both Doosan runs(only one earned). Kadokura allowed six hits and one hit batsman while striking out five.
