6/22 Roundup and News

Doosan 8, Samsung 5
W - Lim Tae-hoon (7-3), L - Ahn Ji-man (5-3), S - Lee Yong-chan (15)
Doosan HR - None Samsung HR - None

Doosan jumped out to a three-run lead with a rally in the second inning. After catcher Yang Eui-ji singled in a run, third baseman Lee Won-seok doubled off the wall to drive in a pair of runs. Samsung answered back with a five-run rally in the top of the third to take the lead. Left fielder Park Han-yi singled with the bases loaded to drive in two runs and cut the lead to 3-2. DH Choi Hyeong-woo singled up the middle to plate another run and tie the game at three. Samsung added two more runs on a double by third baseman Park Seok-min to give Samsung a 5-3 lead. Doosan came back to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on another RBI single from Yang Eui-ji and a safety squeeze by center fielder Lee Jong-wook. Doosan took the lead in the sixth inning. Lee Won-seok tripled with runners on first and second to give Doosan a 7-5 lead. Lee scored on a seeing-eye single past a drawn in infield by Lee Jong Wook. The Doosan bullpen locked the game down in the late innings. Lee Yong-chan threw a perfect ninth with a pair of K's for the save.

SK 11, LG 4
W - Song Eun-beom (6-3), L - Seo Seung-hwa (1-3)
SK HR - Park Jeong-kwon (10) LG HR - Cho In-seong 2 (12)

SK starter Song Eun-beom was able to deliver a quality start and the SK offense was able to get to, well...everyone LG ran out to the mound. Song tossed 5 2/3 innings(93 pitches, 50 pitches) of one-run baseball. Song gave up four hits and two walks while striking out four. SK already had a 3-1 lead when they rallied for eight runs in the sixth inning. Most of the damage came on a grand slam from first baseman Park Jeong-kwon. There was a fielding error by first baseman Lee Taek-geun. First, Lee bobbled a routine grounder while the bases were loaded. Then, he made a half-hearted attempt to get an interference call on the SK runner when he tossed the ball toward the pitcher standing on first base. His ill-fated attempt allowed another run to cross the plate while the ball bounced away. SK third baseman Choi Jeong had to leave the game after taking a Han Hee pitch off his wrist. The injury looked vile in slow motion. I wouldn't be surprised if he missed a few days with bruises or needed some time on the DL with a fracture. LG catcher Cho In-seong was one of the few LG Zombies to show up last night. Cho blasted a pair of solo homers and finished 2-3.

Nexen 10, KIA 3
W - Goh Won-joon (4-3), L - Roman Colon (4-1)
Nexen HR - Kang Byeong-sik (5), Kim Min-woo (6), Hwang Jae-gyun (2) KIA HR - Kim Sang-hyeon (7)

The two starting pitchers had your typical league average, boring five inning with a couple runs and nothing spectacular outing. Nexen was able to get into the shallow end of the KIA bullpen and run up the score with a late rally. KIA didn't have the same luck against the Nexen bullpen. Nexen tagged someone named Cho Tae-su for five runs in the top of the ninth to turn a 5-2 nail biter into a 10-2 laugher. The knockout punch came when pinch hitter Oh Jae-il drove in three runs when he doubled with the bases loaded. Nexen right fielder Doug Clark went 2-5 with an RBI, one run scored and a stolen base. KIA second baseman Ahn Chi-hong was Mr. Unlucky last night. Ahn went 0-2 with two runs scored. He reached base twice when he was hit by pitches.

Lotte 3, Hanhwa 2 (10)
W - Heo Joon-hyeok (1-0), L - Yang Hoon (2-1)
Lotte HR - Karim Garica (19), Hong Seong-heun (17) Hanhwa HR - None

The Lotte Giants managed to avoid the bullpen meltdowns that plagued them last week AND got some late inning heroics from their offense. Hanhwa ace Ryu Hyeon-jin dueled with Lotte warm body Lee Jae-gon for most of the game. Ryu tossed 8 2/3 innings(106 pitches, 71 strikes) of two-run baseball. Ryu gave up seven hits and two walks while striking out eight. Lee Jae-gon tossed eight innings(109 pitches, 72 strikes) and also gave up two runs. Lee allowed six hits and one hit batsman while striking out two. Hanhwa took a 2-0 lead into the ninth inning, but Ryu was tagged for a two-run homer by Karim Garcia. Lotte won the game in the bottom of the tenth inning on a walk off solo homer from DH Hong Seong-heun.
